OLD SCHOOL SPORT COACH WHO IS SHAPING THE DIGITAL AGE (Scott)

How is it that a gray-haired former sports coach of pensionable age and with no technical or engineering skills is the toast of Silicon Valley? Despite dating from 2008, this excellent read remains one of the very few profiles of the man dubbed The Coach, who is one of the most trusted advisers and confidants to the tech sector A-List.

RED LIGHT BIRDS JUST GOT REALLY CUTE (Pamela)

A tiny dove was has been spotted making her nest in a traffic light in the heart of Basildon’s red light district.  And she’s proving quite the distraction to passing motorists too.  Nicknamed Roxanne after the Police song about a lady of the night, this little chick is happy to just watch the cars go by.

@ONTOPOFTHEWORLD (Laura)

Kenton Cool has become the first person to tweet from the top of Mount Everest thanks to a creative marketing trick from Samsung who sponsored Cool to tweet from the summit using a Samsung Galaxy SII smart phone. The tweet shows just how powerful the twitter has become, not just as a marketing ploy but in its ability to work in some of the world’s most extreme conditions. It is not clear how much Samsung paid Cool to send his tweet, but it seems that whatever the sum it was well worth it, as it has hit the headlines across the globe and will most certainly boost sales of the phone, whose connective ability has been proved beyond all expectations. Check out some of the comments after the linked article below, whilst many are sceptical of the sales aspect of the stunt, I do like the one about checking in on FourSquare – imagine being the Mayor of Mount Everest it would be a hard spot to be knocked off!

DOODLE BY GOOGLE (Andrea)

Google has designed a selection of Mr Men doodles to celebrate the 76th birthday of their creator, the late Roger Hargreaves. So every time page is refreshed, Mr Bump, Mr Happy and Little Miss Sunshine appear in the logo – a nice little commemoration. The original books went on sale in 1971 and the cartoons are a great memory from my childhood – if only kids today could have the same quality animation as I did.

TWEET DREAMS – BUT NOT FOR CELEBRITY INJUNCTIONS (Adrian)

The media may have been gagged from revealing the juicy gossip about celebrities thanks to the recent super injunctions, but it seems that twitter users are not so easily silenced. In perhaps the least surprising news of the day, the media is frothing about the fact that the identities of celebrities who have taken out the super injunctions have been posted on twitter. Now it could just be idle speculation and scurrilous rumour-mongering, but the vehemence of the press (and the law) suggests that some of the names being mentioned online are, in fact, correct. The furore has sparked whether social media sites should be subject to the same legal jurisdiction as the press, which could potentially result in tweeters facing legal repercussions for breaking the court orders. If this continues, can can expect to see libel cases being thrown at the authors of 140 word tweets before too long?
