YOU’D HAVE TO BE BARKING TO EAT THIS (Scott)

As China increasingly emerges from a century of torpor to become a global powerhouse, we in the West will have to embrace what makes this ancient culture so different from our own. That includes an appetite for man’s best friend. This video shows hundreds of dogs being rescued while en route to the slaughterhouse.  What’s unpalatable to us, is a delicacy to certain Chinese. Horrible as it sounds, dog meat is probably a lot more sustainable than shark fin soup. So which Chinese culinary peculiarity is really worse?

A MOST UNHOLY ROW (Raymond)

It’s one those delicate issues that instantly provokes a reaction down both sides of the argument – and one that leaves the hapless employer with an impossible PR dilemma.

Driver Colin Atkinson found himself in the middle of a religious war when he decided to put up a palm on the dashboard of his company van.  Stout Christian Colin – a 64-year-old granddad who is just nine months away from retirement –  said all he was doing was innocently putting up the palm to mark Easter.

But Wakefield District Council ordered him to remove the cross when they received an anonymous letter saying tenants maybe offended.  Colin refused to budge and has been disciplined – and he now believe he will sacked for revealing his principled stance.

The row has won Colin plenty of admirers – even a former Archbishop of Canterbury – but left Wakefield District Council with some unwelcome media attention and PR mess.

IT’S FUN TO STAY AT THE MRSA (Pamela)

In a bid to clean up their work place, staff at a Manchester hospital have recorded their very own rendition of the ’80s classic YMCA.  Staff rewrote the lyrics to sing MRSA to reflect the importance of having clean hands, in order to decrease the number of people being infected with the bug.  The three minute music video – which has had almost 1,800 views on You Tube – features around 70 people.  From surgeons, cleaners, doctors and medical staff to a number of the hospital’s patients, anyone who wanted to was encouraged to take part.

I AM IRON(ING) MAN! (Adrian)

It’s great to see that even a major transport catastrophe such as the recent M1 closure can still be seized upon by opportunists looking to have some fun.

This new video currently doing the rounds shows one of Britain’s dedicated “extreme ironing” aficionados stepping out into the empty carriageway to press his smalls – presumably as practice for the sport’s next World Championship.

It’s an eccentric piece of film that will no doubt appear in every “and finally” section of TV news in the coming days. No doubt, some copycat ironers will try and outdo the stunt in the near future as well.

NATS HAVE ALL THE MEDIA COVERED (Scott)

Today The Scottish Sun has announced its support for SNP leaders Alex Salmond’s bid to retain power in the Holyrood Parliament. As well as having the country’s biggest selling popular newspaper behind him, the SNP also appear to be leading the way on new media, using cost-effective software to encourage social media activity and engagement in the run up to the May 5 polls.
