GENEROUS BRITONS TAKE FIFTH PLACE IN NEW KINDNESS STUDY? (Pamela)

According to a study conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Brits are among the kindest people on the planet, ranking high for acts of kindness, generosity and general eagerness to help their neighbours. While this sounds almost Utopian and a population to be proud of, the reality for most people, like me, who make a long commute every day is, yes, Brits are generous and eager, but not with gifts of beaming smiles and right of way. No. They are generous with their middle finger and various other hand gestures while showing genuine eagerness to overtake and undercut at break-neck speeds. And let’s not forget the littering. Ahhhhh the littering. Oh drivers on the M8…how I love to hate you. Maybe these generous Brits are just on holiday at the moment. I await their return with eager anticipation.

ARE YOU A MEMBER OF THE SLEEPLESS ELITE? (Laura)

Scientists in America have discovered a new gene which determines how much sleep we need, finding an explanation for why some of us can remain bright eyed and busy tailed after only four or five hours sleep, while others need to take ‘nanna naps’ to make it through the day. The gene called hdec2 exists in only 1 to 3 people in 100 known as the ‘sleepless elite’ and they tend to be thinner, more upbeat and have a high tolerance for physical pain and psychological set backs. To find out if you are a member, just ask yourself this question: Do you grab the chance of a lie in when you can? If you do then congratulations you can join the likes of Benjamin Franklin and Leonardo Da Vinci – frankly I would rather have a lie in!

EVERYONE LOVES A PAIR OF BOOBS (Andrea)

A programme broadcast last night on BBC Three investigated the reasons behind British women choosing whether or not to breastfeed their babies. This review of the show picks up on the fact that society still hasn’t been able to make a woman feel comfortable breastfeeding in public, which is a sad state of affairs. Although a suggestion that celebrity endorsements would apparently make it more acceptable, anything to change the current perception would be a huge step forward.

THE FAT AND THE FURIOUS – THE PERILS OF ONE PER CENT (Scott)

An astonishing stripping away of what is causing the increasing wealth gap in the US. More worryingly, wherever you read ‘US’ or ‘America’, simply substitute ‘UK’ or ‘Britain’ and you’ll recognise how the situation is mirrored here. Decline and fall is a well-worn historical path. Could this be the looming harbinger of what’s in store for the western world’s way of life?

BEBO BOUNCES BACK (Linsay)

A social networking site which was once competing against Facebook has undergone a major makeover to bring it back up to speed. Bebo – whose members are mainly teenagers – has suffered decreased popularity since being bought by AOL in 2008. It’s new look is to help re-establish itself as a unique product – not just a competitor of Facebook.
