Intern Programme

It’s May already, where did April go? Time has flown and my internship here at Holyrood PR is up

For many students out there it’s heading towards those final few exams and that long holiday involving the decision whether summer is better spent getting a tan, blowing the last of your SAAS money on a festival or buckling down with work. A month-long internship at an award winning PR agency might just be the answer to enjoying both.

You may think that a month is really not long to adjust to a new work space, pace and way of doing things but you’d be wrong. At Holyrood you best arrive with your swimmers on because you’ll be thrown right in at the deep end. Don’t worry if you don’t have the skills of a Starbucks barista for an internship here – you won’t have too much time to make the coffees.

If you’re thinking about applying for an internship here at Holyrood PR in Edinburgh there are a few little things you should be prepared for:

  • Be a sponge – soak up everything that is said to you. Or one better write it down; I’ve found it best to keep a note-pad and no matter how tatty it’s become resist the temptation to rip a page out. You never know when that scrawly note you made beside a doodle will jog your memory of how to find a document.
  • Be a perpetual list maker – Make a ‘to do’ list at the end of the day as well as the beginning. It’s a good way of seeing what you’ve done or rather what you haven’t managed to get done yet. This way you are prepared for next morning’s meeting and can keep everyone in the loop as to how you’re getting on. At the end of the month it’s your summary of what you’ve spent your time doing.
  • Be a linguist – SEO, CMS, KM, AVE, #, and so on. You quickly get to know the abbreviated terms and their importance. By the end of the month your writing skills will have improved dramatically. Remember the significance of the Ws when it comes to stories; who, what, when, where and why.
  • Be able to kick oneself up ones derrière – at Holyrood you will get REAL work experience. Not the kind where someone holds your hand but the kind where you are given a variety of jobs and expected to deliver and not be shy if you need to ask questions. Don’t suffer the same perception as many of an internship, as somewhere you go to shadow people and do the office lunch run, at Holyrood PR that certainly isn’t the case.

One internship or work experience stint, it seems, is no longer the norm. To become a successful candidate of most jobs, experience is the much needed key – an internship at Holyrood PR will certainly get you a step closer as you will walk out with more skills and knowledge than you had when you arrived – It’s valuable experience that is so much more than another line to add to your CV.

In my previous blog post I wrote about past work experience and university study and also the leisurely life style I was getting a little too accustomed to since graduation. Finding a harmonious balance between the two is something I think very important. Many employers want to see personality through your achievements therefore life experience and travel is often just as important as work, study and CV building.

If you’re torn between dusting off your CV and dusting off your pop-up tent and bulk buying baby wipes, look no further, an internship here could afford you both.
