Our newest intern Niamh Coffey summarises an exciting first five days with our Scottish PR team

Graduate Niamh Coffey's first week placement at Edinburgh PR agency, Holyrood PR.

By Niamh Coffey

The first day of my graduate placement began (as I selfishly hope has been common in the work-from-home-scene) with some technical difficulties!

Surprisingly for me, I didn’t feel any sense of panic. This was down to the welcoming and friendly people at Holyrood PR. I can tell from the outset they are dedicated and supportive folk, and partial to a wee laugh.

Thankfully, the technical issues did not persist much over the week, and working from home has been a blessing in disguise (especially considering the weather). There was some comfort and humour to be found in arriving downstairs in the kitchen for my first day, draped in a fluffy Christmas blanket and slippers.

As I progressed through the first few days, working with the Edinburgh PR agency has already been an enlightening experience. The stellar moment has to be coming across a news article about their tech client Skyrora on my Facebook feed, shortly after the initial press release was sent out and discussed during the daily meeting! It’s illuminating even just being present in the daily catch-up meetings and brainstorms, hearing how the team can quickly generate brilliant ideas and headline phrases.

I’ve written up success posts on coverage of client activities which has given me a great insight into the team’s recent PR triumphs. These posts have mostly focused on Property PR, a sector which has been of great interest to me as I have never investigated Property PR in-depth before. Testament to Holyrood PR’s work is the fact I’m sitting there lusting after a CALA home and some Mackie’s Ice Cream!

As a recent Public Relations graduate, I have confidence in my ability to learn as I go, but the fast-pace is going to take a wee bit of getting used to. I’m using new software, learning new practices and skills. It’s a challenge!

I know that even a few months ago I would interpret my nerves as dread, but with the supportive team at Holyrood PR and a bit of homely reassurance, I know that being out of my comfort zone right now is going to do me the world of good.

I’m so excited to get to know everyone better, and learn as much as I can!
