PHWOAR FIVE (Laura)

12 of Scotland’s most toned and tanned firemen have stripped off for a charity calendar to raise funds for the Scottish Burned Children’s Club and it is sure to be a hit with the ladies. I passed on the link to the ladies around the office and we all agreed that it should January for 12 months of the year and we were particularly intrigued by Mr October’s rather large tool – check it out for your self! So girls if you like a man in (or out of in this case) uniform and want to do your bit for charity head to www.theburnsclub.org and get yours while their hot!

VODKA SHOT (Aimee)

This story is definitely a case of ‘don’t try this at home.’  With the weekend almost upon us, many of you will be indulging in the odd alcohol beverage or two…or three… or floor but what I doubt you will be doing is thinking of creating your own vodka distillery.  But if you are, let the case of Welsh inventor Lawrence Toms be a safety warning to you.  The 44 year old blew up his house and suffered burns to his hands, arms and face from the explosion but is in a stable condition.  Ten neighboring houses were evacuated for precaution and fire crew battled with the fire for three hours to get it under control.Police believe the explosion was triggered by the home-brewing kit and he avoids prosecution as officers convinced that he was making it for his own consumption which isn’t an illegal offence.Lawrence also runs his own small company which makes, amongst other things, gift paper and stationary from sheep droppings which I couldn’t help but google and found that it’s described as “the ultimate in recycling.”  So for all those eco friendly warriors out there, this could be right up your street.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE FIRST THING TO POP UP (Scott)

It may look like a skateboard ramp, but this is apparently the latest in pop-up, outdoor cinema – powered by your smart phone. Plug in your iPhone or Android device, then kick back and watch your favourite content on a big screen with stereo sound. With luck there will be dozens of these soon being defaced in a dog-sh*t strewn park near you soon!

9/11 FROM SPACE (Laura)

These stunning but chilling images taken from space, show a birds eye view of the devastation caused by the terrorist attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. Visible from onboard the International Space Station is the plume of black smoke coming from the towers at the time of the attacks and provides a reminder of the scale and size of the atrocity – one of the biggest terror attacks in American history. Taken by Frank Culbertson who rushed to get a view of New York as news of the disaster struck, the intimate view of the disaster had a profound effect upon him. In a public message to his fellow countrymen the following day he wrote: “‘It’s horrible to see smoke pouring from wounds in your own country from such a fantastic vantage point. The dichotomy of being on a spacecraft dedicated to improving life on the Earth and watching life being destroyed by such wilful, terrible acts is jolting to the psyche, no matter who you are.”

GADGETS THAT BOLDY WENT WHERE NO GADGETS HAD GONE BEFORE (Adrian)

It’s often said that modern technology and gadgets are inspired by the science fiction dreams of past generations. But perhaps the greatest influence on the products that we take for granted these days is the classic TV and film franchise Star Trek. Back in the 60s, the show wowed audiences with the sort of technology that only existed in the dreams and imaginations of its creators. Phasers, communicators, transporters and even futuristic USB flash drives were the stuff of science fiction, but now – with the regrettable exception of the laser-powered phaser – most of these have been developed by tech geeks who were clearly fans of the show. This list highlights eight of the most prominent pieces of Star Trek tech that are now available today. Who’d have thought Steve Jobs got the idea for an iPad from Captain Jean Luc Picard?
