Four weeks too short for my internship at Holyrood PR

An insight into my valuable month with an award winning PR agency

Four weeks ago, I awoke to the unfamiliar sound of my 7am alarm clock, I ate my breakfast and started walking to the office for my first day at my internship with Holyrood PR.

I didn’t know what to expect of agency life, but as I opened the door into this new world my nerves were put at ease with welcoming smiles and various hellos.

A month down the line and it feels like only a second ago that I walked through those doors. The amount of skills I have learned in my time here has been nothing short of amazing.

I went from not knowing how to write a press release to it and many other writing styles becoming second nature, and this is reflective of the people who have helped me out along the way. The friendly approach the office adopts encouraged me work hard to ensure I was delivering the best results.

The team talked me through each task, and took time out of their busy schedules to check on me. This was often accompanied with words of encouragement and a giggle, which helped me stay positive throughout the day.

From the get-go I was trusted to deliver for clients and this greatly improved my confidence and pushed me out of my comfort zone. Writing has never been a strong suit of mine, so it was reassuring to have the team trust me with writing press releases, and success stories for clients such as CALA Homes, Blackwood, and Paths for All.

It was interesting to see how different clients require different approaches. Having the license to absorb myself creatively for all of these clients has enabled me to explore different writing styles.

Two of my favourite clients to work on were Mackie’s of Scotland and Bield, as they required imaginative thinking when it came to writing and designing content – I’m sure my dream of eating my way into old age also played a significant part in this.

One of my highlights was working with the team during creative brainstorms and learning from their expertise in our weekly Lunch ‘n’ Learn sessions. Having the opportunity to work with people in the PR industry and pick up their knowledge was really beneficial to me as I enter the post-university world.

My Holyrood PR internship has been incredibly eye opening. It has put my skills to the test, and has graced me with new ones. It has been a great opportunity to expand my knowledge in the diverse PR industry and has been truly wonderful having the team cheering me on along the way. Thank you!
