Film student aims to take down German poker players

Littlewoods Poker Press releases

A FILM student who took up online poker during a break in his studies is set to compete against some of the best players from Germany at a prestigious tournament.

Jonathan Godfrey, from Manchester, will take on six players from England and Germany at the event on August 8, where he will have the chance to scoop a £2500 top prize.

The 21-year-old student only started playing poker two years ago and, until 12 months ago. But after perfecting his poker skills following his final exams, he has now become one of the top players on the LittlewoodsPoker.com website – earning him the chance to compete for the £2500 jackpot at the London final.

The final event is scheduled to take place at The Victoria Grosvenor Casino London on Saturday and Jonathan admitted that he expects it will be a highly charged England vs. Germany competition.

He said: “I’m thrilled to make it to the final, as it’s the first live tournament that I’ll have ever played in, so I’m very excited.

“I imagine it will be a pretty close competition and, with players from England and Germany, it should be quite interesting. I’m sure there will be a lot of national pride at stake for both sides.

“I only started playing poker two years ago, and even then it was just against friends and in low-stakes pub games. I didn’t even start playing online poker properly until about a year ago.

“Over the past 12 months I’ve been finishing a film and American studies degree at university and using some of my free time to play, but I didn’t really have much time to dedicate to it until my course finished earlier this summer.

“Since then, however, I’ve had a lot of free time on my hands and I used it to get better and earn as many points as I could.

“Now that I’ve won my way to the final, I’m going to give it my best shot. I’ve got nothing to lose so hopefully, I can beat a few of my opponents and have a shot at winning the cash prize.”

The event is the culmination of a month-long online competition held at LittlewoodsPoker.com, which was set up to coincide with the recent Euro 2008 football championships.

Every player on the popular site was invited to compete for My Poker Points – Littlewoods Poker’s system of rewards for playing online poker games – with the final table in London made up of the highest-earning players from throughout the month of June.

With four players from England and three from Germany making up the final table, organisers have admitted that it should be a highly competitive tournament with a lot of national pride at stake.

Stephanie Sammut, Marketing Manager for Littlewoods Poker, said: “There are a lot of players from across the world who choose our site because we are the trusted name in gaming. However, the Beautiful Poker Game tournament seems to have brought out the best in our English and German players.

“The final tournament in London should be a very hard fought contest, so we wish all of the participants the best of luck. England vs. Germany games are usually very close contests across all sports, so I imagine this one will be no different and we’re delighted to be offering these players the chance to show off their skills face to face with other online players.

“Our three gamers from Germany will be very difficult to beat, as each of them has proved their poker skills through the website. However, each of the English players will be desperate to come out on top and it will be fascinating to see who wins the £2500 prize.”
