Every day is a learning day in the PR industry – my first week at Holyrood PR

If there is one rule I live by, it is to always chase your dreams.

5 years ago, if someone had told me that I would be studying at a Scottish University and completing an internship at an award-winning PR Agency in Edinburgh, I would probably not have believed them.

I still remember my first few days in Scotland. Having just moved from Poland at 18 years old, I was even afraid to contribute during English literature due to the language barrier.

Some years later, I’m a 4th year Public Relations and Media student at Queen Margaret University, undertaking another new challenge.

After completing a placement in Lisbon, working for a fashion company’s in-house team as a digital marketing and content creation intern, I was yet to have full experience of working as part of an agency.

In the lead up to my first day at Holyrood PR, I was apprehensive and nervous about the tasks I might be faced with, as well as having what felt like a million questions.

After arriving at the office on Monday morning and meeting the team, I realised how welcoming and positive everyone was, which made me feel more confident and relaxed.

My lovely colleague Alice showed me around and introduced my first task – a newspaper sweep, which soon became a key part of my new morning routine.

Later, I had the opportunity to develop my skills in Photoshop, tasked with creating coverage montages for Jerba & CALA the Crescent. While at first it was daunting and something I would have rather avoided, I eventually found it enjoyable and therapeutic.

Next, I was asked to call journalists to discuss the unveiling of a secret vault room in an Edinburgh Hostel. The prospect of this initially filled me with fear. However, after a few calls and with all the encouragement and support offered by the team, I had a newfound sense of confidence.

Every day is a learning day at Holyrood PR. I am very grateful for this amazing internship opportunity and a chance to grow. I already feel like I’ve learned so much and I can’t wait to see what I will experience during the rest of my internship.

To sum up my first week at the agency in one sentence would be – ‘Always choose courage over comfort’.
