Edinburgh Campus Now Boasts 18 Electric Charging Points

THE Pollock Halls campus at The University of Edinburgh now boasts what is believed to be Scotland’s capital’s highest concentration of publicly-accessible EV chargers.

A total of 18 high-tech electric vehicle (EV) charging points can now be accessed at an important single location within one of the UK’s most forward-thinking universities.

Part-funded by a grant from the Energy Saving Trust, the result is an additional 16 charge points linked to the ChargePlace Scotland Network, including a Tesla Destination Charger.

As a consistently busy conference and events destination, year-round facilities at Pollock Halls include The John McIntyre Conference Centre (JMCC), St Leonard’s Hall and South Hall.

The four-star Salisbury Green Hotel and Bistro is also situated in the grounds of Pollock Halls where in the summer the student residences transform into a 2,000-bed hotel.

Richard Kington, Director of Accommodation, Catering and Events, said: “The onus is on us to put environmental policy at the top of our priorities.

“More people are using electric vehicles all the time, but the big hurdle is often access to chargers.

“This investment takes that hurdle away for anybody visiting the campus for conferences or staying at our hotel, providing a very high level of certainty that if travelling from further afield there will be a charge point available to recharge. Our guests are able to borrow a card to recharge at no cost.

“As part of the University of Edinburgh’s policy to “Go Zero Carbon before 2040” we take our own responsibility very seriously, so I’m delighted to now offer such extensive charging facilities to all visiting us at Pollock.”

All of the newly available charging points are 22kW with Type 2 connector.

As well as hotel guests, conference delegates, university staff and students, Pollock Halls chargers are also available to members of the public who have ChargePlace Scotland cards for up to three hours at a time.

Tasked with maximising revenue from The University of Edinburgh’s assets, Accommodation Catering & Events (ACE) markets services externally under its commercial brand name of Edinburgh First.

It recently landed Commercial University of the Year at the College and University Business Officers (CUBO) awards.

In 2018 alone, the department organised 1,648 events for more than 132,000 delegates – and accommodated more than 42,000 guests across its hotels and apartments, bringing huge economic and academic benefit to the Scottish capital.
