Scottish PR agency paints new environmental art project in positive light

LOCAL businesses Jerba Campervans and Caledonia Horticulture recently launched an initiative to shed light on the growing levels of pollution along Scotland’s coastline.

In partnership with the North Berwick Harbour Trust, the contributors have commissioned award-winning local artist, Julie Barnes, to create a mural made up of 27,000 pieces of plastic collected from East Lothian beaches.

The mural will depict a beach scene as well as an image of Bass Rock and will stretch eight metres across North Berwick’s harbour wall. It will also be accompanied by an interpretation board explaining the meaning behind the artwork.

Our tourism PR team wanted to showcase this exemplary initiative and position both Jerba Campervans and Caledonia Horticulture as leaders in their sectors regarding sustainability and environmental awareness.

The story received an extremely positive response from local and national media:

  • 18 items of coverage
  • 553,510 opportunities to see
  • Key features in: STV News, East Lothian Courier (print and online), The National, North Edinburgh News, The Edinburgh Reporter, Deadline News, Business Mondays, Scotland Connected, Edinburgh live, Edinburgh Evening News (print)

To gain an understanding behind the project our tourism PR team interviewed Jerba Campervans Chairman, Simon Poole, and Kate Miller, Marketing, Communications and Environmental Manager at Caledonian Horticulture.

These interviews highlighted the meaning behind the project and illustrated the goals that the businesses hope to achieve through it. Jerba also wanted to convey its commitment to its local community and environment, and that the mural will demonstrate the detrimental effect that plastic pollution has on the environment.

We also interviewed the commissioned artist, Julie Barnes, who illustrated the power of art as a medium of communication. She hopes that this mural will be able to educate and empower the local community to tackle pollution along their coastline.

For our PR team it was important to pitch our press release to a range of publications to reach different audiences. Featuring in national outlets such as STV News sheds light on marine pollution throughout Scotland, and could inspire further action in other areas of the country. Coverage in regional publications such as the East Lothian Courier means the local community are able to celebrate this innovative and creative project, while highlighting the positive action local businesses are adopting to address growing environmental concerns.

This outstanding range of media coverage across local, trade and national publications ensures that this positive project has gained a lot of exposure, shedding light on environmental worries throughout Scotland.
