A STATE-OF-THE-ART imaging system that allows surgeons to see complex anatomy in far greater detail than ever before, leading to improved outcomes for young patients, has been donated by Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity (ECHC).

The 4k resolution endoscopic camera system has been installed into the ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Theatres at The Royal Hospital for Sick Children (RHSC), although other medical departments are able to use it for a range of procedures.

Dr. Peter Gillett, who has helped run the gastroenterology department in the RHSC for the past 17 years, and chairs the scope users group at the hospital said the new £50,000 technology will transform the current system in place at the hospital.

He said: “Thanks to the Olympus 4k endoscopic imaging system, surgeons will be able to see complex anatomy in far greater detail than ever before.

“The benefits of this system will dramatically improve the clarity of what we can see inside the human body on the screen. It allows procedures to be performed with greater confidence, while new techniques can be used and teaching will be improved.

“We are confident this will help improve results when performing a range of procedures such as minimally invasive surgery.

“The benefit for the children is it likely means reduced trauma, quicker procedure times and shorter recovery time. On top of that it will also allow us to enhance the parents’ understanding of the condition their child has.”

Although based in the ENT service, the hospital’s respiratory department, gastroenterology and general surgery departments will now all benefit from use of the advanced endoscopic camera system especially when they are involved with combined procedures in patients who need input of several teams.

Vicki Watson, Community Fundraiser at ECHC, said: “We are delighted to have been able to fund this incredible piece of technology for the hospital.

“While we often fund equipment or services to enhance a young person’s time in hospital, we also give out many grants like this that allow the incredible doctors at RHSC to provide an enhanced level of treatment and care to patients.

“At ECHC, we exist to ensure children and young people’s lives are less interrupted by illness and that they have a more positive hospital experience. By providing cutting edge equipment, such as the 4k endoscopic imaging system, we are able to do this.”

Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity support and complement the work of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (RHSC) as well as other children’s healthcare settings across Scotland.
