With East Lothian about to host Europe’s biggest junior golf tournament, one local teenage competitor is getting a dream chance to prepare his game for the event by travelling to America to watch The Masters in person.
Accompanied by father and Gullane PGA Golf Professional Alasdair Good, 15 year old, Brodie Good, will make his debut trip to Augusta to soak up the atmosphere of one of the world’s most prestigious events.
With dreams of one day entering the professional field himself, Brodie, hopes the once in a lifetime experience will help further inspire him to improve his game – just in time for competing in one of the most important fixtures on the junior calendar, the U.S. Kids Golf European Championships.
And dad Alasdair, who is the Tournament Coordinator, also hopes the magic of The Masters will rub off on him too as he looks for tips to continually improve the East Lothian competition.
Brodie, who currently plays in the Lothians Under 16 team, said: “I’m counting down the days until we leave now. I have watched The Masters on TV for so many years, I can’t wait to actually get out there and experience it for myself.
“Ahead of the U.S. Kids Golf European Championships in East Lothian this May, I’m practising harder than ever and really think the trip to Augusta will help focus my game.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how the players cope with the pressure of such an important tournament and I’ll also be taking my clubs with me to get in some additional practice.
“Last year I was runner up in the European Championships so hopefully being surrounded by such talented players just weeks before the tournament will rub off on me so I can continue to improve my performance.”
The father and son duo have arranged to pack their clubs so they can get in some golf in the courses surrounding the famed Augusta National.
Alasdair said: “When I found out I could take Brodie on the trip to Augusta with me, I couldn’t wait to tell him. I have been myself once before and it is such a magical experience that I wanted Brodie to be able to see it for himself.
“The atmosphere is unrivalled at the tournament, with every spectator in attendance, truly passionate about the game.
“Having been involved in organising the U.S. Kids Golf European Championships for six years now as well as the Wee Wonders British Championships for 18 years, I understand what a crucial part having strong professional role models plays in the youngsters aspirations so am delighted that Brodie will have this experience.
“And, of course, if there are any organisational tips I can pick up for our event back in East Lothian that will be another bonus.
“I’m sure the continued strength of the U.S. Kids Golf European Championships will mean that one day we’ll see ex-competitors go on to play at Augusta themselves.”
The 2014 U.S. Kids Golf European Championships takes places over May 27-29 over five famous East Lothian courses: Gullane No.2, Gullane No.3, Craigielaw Golf Club, Luffness New Golf Club and Longniddry Golf Club.
Entry for the event is now open with categories for young players of all ages and abilities. More information can be found at www.uskidsgolf.com.
The U.S. Kids Golf Foundation was launched in 2001 to provide opportunities for children across the world to learn and play golf and to forge new friendships. Since holding its first tournament in 2000, U.S. Kids Golf Foundation now runs some 800 events each year including the prestigious World Championships at Pinehurst.
The Foundation is the charitable branch of U.S. Kids Golf – the world’s largest producer of junior golf equipment. The firm has pioneered the development of golf clubs for young people, eliminating the problem of kids using heavier, cut-down adult clubs which often hurts developing swings and discourages budding players.
