The company donated a generous sum of £853.70 to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in Kirkwall, following a raffle held in December.

RNLI is a charity devoted to saving lives at sea which provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service.

Employees at Meridian Salmon Group’s farm in Kirkwall chose to raise funds to donate to their local RNLI branch and the firm sponsored 20 prizes in total for the raffle including a TV, Kindle, DVD player, whisky, an iPod and a state of the art fishing rod.

Mark Warrington, Managing Director at Meridian Salmon Group, said: “We believe it is crucial to support Scotland’s more rural communities and we are committed to helping the local communities in which we operate and to providing support when we can.

“Kirkwall Lifeboat is an important asset to Orkney life and hopefully our donation can help support this asset to its full potential.”

Moira Irvine, Honorary Treasurer at Orkney Mainland RNLI Fundraisers said: “We would like to sincerely thank all at the Meridian Salmon Group for their charitable donation to Kirkwall Lifeboat.

“As it is never easy for us to keep coming up with fresh, new fundraising ideas, we are particularly grateful to people and organisations in Orkney who help our fundraising by making donations and holding events in support of the lifeboat service.

“It is donations such as this that enable the RNLI to maintain the high standard of boats and equipment that our lifeboat crews so richly deserve.”

Meridian Salmon Group is one of the top five salmon farming companies in Scotland, employing 350 people particularly in small communities in Shetland, Orkney and the West Coast.

The firm operates at 61 sea sites and 19 freshwater sites across Scotland and Cumbria and is currently developing its new facility in the former Lexmark building in Rosyth, which will be the biggest processing plant in the UK.
