DON DRAPER HELPS SCOTS MEN RECLAIM THE COCKTAIL MENU

G1 Group Press releases

The Bothy EdinburghAn Edinburgh bar has brought a little bit of America to the Capital, with the favourite tipple of Mad Men’s Don Draper fast becoming a firm favourite for men looking to reclaim the art of the cocktail.

And the team at The Bothy Restaurant and Drinkery in Murrayfield have been delighted with the response from male customers, who have made the Old Fashioned one of the most popular drinks on the menu.

The masculine credentials of the whisky-based concoction are also further enhanced because drinkers are served their measure in a manly hip flask.

Colin Brand, general manager at The Bothy, said: “This drink is something of a forgotten classic which is enjoying a revival because it is the chosen drink of Don Draper and his pals in Mad Men.

“Despite that, you’d have a hard job finding a proper Old Fashioned in most places, so we are delighted to have reintroduced it.

“It’s a no-nonsense cocktail and that’s why we serve it in a hip flask. Some things are quintessentially blokeish and this is right up there with Old Spice, DIY, Yorkie bars and brown sauce.”

The name Old Fashioned was first coined for a Bourbon whiskey cocktail served at the Pendennis Gentleman’s Club in Louisville, Kentucky in 1881. However, variations of the recipe are among the earliest recorded cocktails dating back to the early 1800s.

At The Bothy connoisseurs can choose either Scotch whisky (Auchentoshan or Glenkinchie) or American bourbon whiskey (Woodford Reserve or Gentleman Jack) to be mixed with sugar and bitters to create their Old Fashioned.

Colin added: “The feedback we have received from customers has been excellent and even our regulars have become quite fond of them

“Most of them love the hip flask it really adds to the cocktail and is a nod to the Scottish heritage of the drink. However we can also serve it in a brandy balloon, while for larger groups we serve it in a crystal decanter with crystal glasses to share.”

The drink forms a centrepiece of The Bothy’s new cocktail menu, which also features ingredients picked fresh from the local area.  It also includes many women-friendly cocktails, including

Gin-based Raspberry and Almond Collins, a chilli infused Mango and Jalapeno Margarita and the Strawberry and Vanilla Fizz.

Located just outside the city centre, The Bothy prides itself on having the atmosphere of a popular local bar in a stylish setting. It offers a high-quality menu, complimentary car parking, beer garden and a cocktail menu with something for everyone.
