Currie heading into new season with £15,000 backing from CALA

A MAJOR housebuilder has shown its commitment to the Currie community by sponsoring the local rugby club for the eighth year in succession.

Premiership team Currie Chieftains has welcomed the news that CALA Homes (East) will continue as its main sponsor for the 2019-20 season.

The announcement comes at a time of major change for national rugby, following the Scottish Rugby Union’s (SRU) decision to create the ‘Super 6’ semi-professional competition as a tier between the Tennent’s Premiership and the two Scottish professional teams, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Because of this, club rugby in Scotland and Premiership teams are undergoing significant restructuring, with Currie Chieftains currently appointing new coaches and players.

CALA’s £15,000 commitment to the club will continue to support the Chieftains throughout this overhaul of domestic rugby – and help with the ongoing costs of kit, equipment and travel.

Charles Mullins, Chairman of Currie Rugby Club, said: “CALA’s continued involvement means a great deal to us and is fundamental to our sports and community objectives.

“We have always sought to build strong relationships with potential sponsors in our region and our relationship with CALA is hugely valued and appreciated, particularly at a time of change in top level rugby in Scotland.”

The club, which was conceived by six rugby enthusiasts who met in a Currie pub and founded in 1970, built its reputation on a 25-year climb from the Edinburgh District League, Division 2 to reach the top-flight Scottish Premiership in the mid-1990s.

Thereafter it has never looked back, becoming distinguished by its year-on-year performance, and by playing a distinctive open style of rugby attracting both players and fans.

CALA Homes (East) has a long-standing relationship with the Balerno and Currie community, delivering a number of successful sites in the area in recent years, including the award-winning Kinleith Mill in Currie. It is currently selling new homes in Balerno at its Ravelrig Heights and Kingfisher Park developments.

The housebuilder has been a shirt sponsor of Currie Chieftains since 2011 and for the last two years has contributed £2000 to the Currie and Balerno Community Chest, run in partnership by the Rotary Club of Currie and Balerno and the Balerno Village Trust.

Derek Lawson, Strategic Land Director with CALA Homes (East), said: “It’s an absolute pleasure to support the Chieftains once again this season – especially during a period of some change and uncertainty.

“We are very aware that CALA is a visible part of the Currie and Balerno and we want to bring benefit to the wider area surrounding our developments.

“Currie Chieftains is a special part of this community. Despite all the recent changes to the league structure, on behalf of CALA I’d like to wish the club the very best for the season.”
