Crazy how time flies – what I learned from four weeks at an Edinburgh PR agency.

Holyrood PR BlogIntern Programme

Graduate, Fiona Kirkup, reflects on her remote internship and what it’s taught her about the fast-paced world of Scottish PR.

COMING to the end of my busy four weeks here at Holyrood PR has left me reflecting on all the interesting things I have learned during my time here.

What made this internship so different from any of my previous ones, was the amount of trust and responsibility I was given, and how I was made to feel like a real member of the team from the onset and throughout.

Having come originally from an entirely in-house PR based background, it was enlightening to come into contact with such a broad spectrum of clients on a daily basis. Constantly switching between sectors such as Property, Health, and Food and Drink PR has taught me the importance of thinking on my feet, and really added to the value of my experience here.

During my time at Holyrood PR I have written press releases and media coverage posts, created social media content and media lists and completed a wide range of research for various upcoming projects. It’s great to think that I’ve played my part in the great work HPR are doing for their amazing clients.

One of my highlights was sitting in on an interview for an upcoming press release for Jerba Campervans. I transcribed the meeting and used my notes to weave key quotes and details into the original release.

Another big moment was helping with Mackie’s of Scotland! Mackie’s is truly my favourite ice cream so that was an added bonus.

But I think my favourite element of my time at Holyrood was the team brainstorms. We did these when we had to come up with ideas for a current or prospective client, and this was one of my favourite parts because I got to see the creativity of the team as they came together and bounced ideas off each other to see what they could come up with, and I loved getting involved and being a part of these meetings.

Throughout my internship, the team really did go above and beyond to make me feel welcome and assign me meaningful tasks.

For anyone who is reading this and wondering whether an internship at Holyrood PR would be a good experience, I can wholeheartedly say that I enjoyed every moment. Don’t hesitate to get in touch!

This experience has been the perfect kick-starter to get me back in action, I can’t wait to continue my journey and continue getting stuck into the world of PR.

I can’t thank the Holyrood team enough!
