The long-serving boss of Scotland’s biggest independent courier firm has been recognised by the industry at a major event in the House of Lords.

Jerry Stewart, a director of Eagle Couriers was made a Fellow of the Institute of Couriers (IoC) In a “gowning” ceremony befitting the pomp and circumstance of the historic setting.

The Bathgate-based businessman was welcomed to his new positon by a Peer of the realm, Viscount Falkland. It is believed to be the first time the honour has been bestowed on an independent Scottish firm.

Last night Jerry, who lives in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, said; “It was actually quite overwhelming to be recognised by prominent people from the industry.

“It was an amazing experience and myself and the other IoC fellows were given a guided tour of the Lords and the House of Commons.

“This is now a chance for me to provide a voice for Scotland – and to ensure that we are shaping policy around what is best for our industry and the Scottish economy.Holyrood PR Eagle Couriers

“I have seen the industry change a great deal as I approach my third decade in the courier business – It was great to be there in the early boom years and it is fantastic to see that it has grown into such an important industry for the UK.”

Tracy Worth, Secretary at the Institute of Couriers said: “Being asked to become a Fellow at the Institute of Couriers marks Jerry out as a leader within the industry.

The Institute has a huge influence on the Government – who present it with proposed changes to policies – then a dialogue takes place and official industry feedback is given.”

Jerry, who has worked for the West Lothian based Eagle Couriers for 26 years and was involved in establishing the firm, was nominated and approved as a Fellow due to his passion for the industry.
