A POPULAR West Lothian Community Sports Club has been given a recipe for success after a generous donation has enabled it to transform its kitchen.

West Calder Bowling Club has received a generous £4,690 grant from the Banks Mining Rusha Surface Coal Mine Community Fund which has allowed it to improve facilities and offer the potential to raise substantially more funds through increased private bookings.

With the proceeds, the club has already been able to refit the kitchen with non-slip flooring, new lighting as well as the installation of industrial ovens and hobs.

Tommy Sutherland, president of West Calder Bowling Club believes this will make a huge difference to the club as a venue, which is open to the community for functions – as they can now offer first class catering facilities.

He said: “This sizeable donation will have a big positive impact on the club. Our facilities are integral not just to our club members but also to our engagement with the community as a hub for all manner of events.

“Having such high quality catering equipment available for use will aid in further fundraising as we’ll be able to attract more interest in the use of the function hall and it of course helps our day to day use of the building.

“We’re especially grateful to Banks Mining for this funding – we wouldn’t have been able to make these improvements to the clubhouse without it.”

The club, which has already been able to put the new amenities to good use, bowls during the summer season and made the application and improvements during the winter. The kitchen was ready for the start of the new season and the official opening of the green.

Not only providing an opportunity for locals to keep fit and active, West Calder Bowling Club has a thriving social scene – and a good number of the 260 members are non-bowlers.

Mark Dowdall, environment and community director at the Banks Group, said: “The bowling club at West Calder is known as a real community hub, not only providing an important centre for activity, but also for socialising – and Banks Mining is delighted to play a part in helping that to continue.

“We hope that this donation can make a real difference in the short term, but also contribute to the success of the club in the future.”

The Banks Rusha Community Fund is a fund set up by family-owned Banks Mining, to support community groups, voluntary organisations and environmental projects in the Fauldhouse and Breich Valley Ward area of West Lothian.

The Rusha surface mine, to the west of West Calder, started production in 2012 and restoration works are now being progressed.

The company estimates that the Rusha site has contributed more than £5 million to the local economy each year through wages and other supply chain contributions.
