Commsworld Grows Further with Key Appointments

Jen Wilson (2)Commsworld has underlined its commitment to correct the gender imbalance in the tech and IT sector by appointing a highly experienced Service manager to oversee the installation and running of transformational new IT and Telephone services for the City of Edinburgh Council.

Jen Wilson is among an impressive raft of 16 new appointments, six of them female, at Commsworld, Scotland’s largest independent telecommunications and digital services provider.

The Edinburgh based firm is placing extra significance on Jen’s appointment – and hopes her high profile appointment in an IT and Telecoms business will help inspire more women into currently male-dominated industries.

Jen, who was previously at Capita, brings more than 20 years experience across varying roles within the IT industry, said: “The culture within Commsworld has been a breath of fresh air – and it is so pleasing to move to a company where everyone is prepared to do whatever is needed to make it succeed.

“This company has the ability to respond to customer requests and deliver a unique solution when called upon.  The working environment is fantastic and the whole company has a family feel and welcomes new starts with open arms.”

Speaking about the industry gender imbalance, Jen said: “The sector has for so long been male dominated but there is no reason for that to be the case. It is a matter of diversity – a range of backgrounds is absolutely essential in any industry to instil a broader range of thinking.”

Commsworld has enjoyed a hugely successful past twelve months – with staff growing from 47 to 63 – thanks to its partnership with CityFibre to deliver the ultra-fast Edinburgh CORE network, as well as its contract win with CGI, where it became a key provider in the £186m City of Edinburgh Council ICT contract.

Jen believes the CGI project, has allowed Commsworld to making a significant difference to key services in its home town.

She said: “It is clear to see that the contract with CGI to deliver huge upgrades to Edinburgh schools and libraries has tremendous social value and is a project close to the heart of many at Commsworld.”

Ricky Nicol, Chief Executive of Commsworld, said: “Last year’s growth of the business was hard earned but very pleasing nonetheless.

“There have been some important additions to the team – and we are particularly pleased to secure the appointment of Jen to lead the major work with the Council.

“Jen’s comments on encouraging diversity in the industry are especially pertinent. Creativity of thinking is now absolutely essential and we must look to encouraging people of all backgrounds to view this industry as exciting and open to all sorts of opportunity.”

Commsworld’s integral role in the Council ICT project is to deliver a 400 site Wide Area Network (WAN), delivering faster and more reliable connectivity for schools, libraries and other council buildings.

Commsworld will also rollout an IP Telephony solution for 7000 users and a 250 seat Contact Centre. These key aspects of the ICT contract will deliver significant benefits to the end users, while also creating a number of new jobs in the Scottish IT market.

The WAN will utilise Edinburgh CORE – the “Pure Fibre” network Commsworld launched in May 2015 with infrastructure provider, CityFibre.

A WAN allows a large organisation spread over a large geographic area and across multiple sites – such as a local authority – to relay information among staff, students, clients, buyers and suppliers. In essence, the WAN allows a business to effectively carry out its daily function regardless of location.

The ultra-fast WAN that Commsworld and CityFibre will introduce will allow the council services to run on “pure-fibre” technology for the first time, resulting in the various locations to communicate in real-time and carry out online services far faster.
