A Bupa care home in Glasgow has seen its plans to open a sensory room take a step forward.
Staff, friends and families at Bupa’s Ailsa Craig Care Home in Cessnock raised £700 from a fundraising disco held in the local Fairfield Bowling Club while £200 was raised from a tea and cake afternoon.
The money raised is to be spent on beauty pampering items for residents as well contributing to a proposed sensory room in the home’s Dementia Care Unit
Sensory rooms can be hugely beneficial to people with dementia as they help to provide a calm, soothing atmosphere and the use of different senses, such as touch, can act as a trigger for past memories.
Sheila Margey, Home Manager at Ailsa Craig Care Home, said that staff are currently researching the cost for a sensory room but hope that they will be able to launch the project sometime in the new year.
She said: “It is really great to have the support of staff, friends and families when it comes to fundraising for additional activities at Ailsa Craig.
“As we run a Dementia Care Unit within one of our homes, a sensory session will be a great benefit to residents who live there.
“Sensory rooms are known to help calm stress and anxiety, as well as working to stimulate the senses of our residents who use the room on a daily basis.
“When deciding what else to put the funds raised towards, we thought it may be nice to add to some of the items residents had at the home, such as a new set of tongs, new hairdryers and other kinds of pampering equipment.”
