Care Home Hosts “Fine Dining” Burns Night

Bupa Care Services Press releases

25 JAN Darnley Court Burns NightA care home in Glasgow made Burns Night a memorable experience for its residents by hosting an evening of fine Scottish dining – with a little help from local primary school children.

Bupa’s Darnley Court care home, on Nitshill Road, welcomed the pupils from YPeople Out of School Care at St Bernard’s Primary School to join in with the festivities, which included a rich three course menu and the piping in of the haggis by a local piper.

The children then treated residents and staff to a ceilidh performance, allowing them to experience the traditional dancing from the comfort of their own armchair, before addressing and toasting the haggis.

The classic Burns Night menu was also designed by the pupils for the special evening, and residents tucked into a starter of scotch broth, followed by a choice of haggis, neeps and tatties with whisky sauce or salmon with dill sauce, mashed potatoes and veggies.

For dessert, the choice of trifle, oatcakes and cheese, tea and coffee or even a “wee dram” was on offer.

Activity coordinator, Janet Stone, told of how activities such as this can be equally beneficial for both residents and pupils alike.

She said “It was a great night with fantastic food, drinks and music – and having the children with us this year to address the haggis and perform the ceilidh dances for the residents made it even better.

“At Bupa, we strive to create innovative and inspiring activities such as this to provide the best quality of life for our residents. Spending time with the pupils gave them such a boost as they loved interacting with them and hearing about what life is like for kids growing up these days.
“Everyone thoroughly enjoyed celebrating such a patriotic event and the haggis was by far the most popular choice of dish – which came as no surprise to anyone.”
