DEVOTED HUSBAND JOINS WIFE IN GLASGOW CARE HOME

Bupa Care Services Press releases

Charlie and Margaret Stewart with familyA devoted husband was so impressed by the support his wife received in a Glasgow care home, he decided to move in too – and just in time for their 66th wedding anniversary and Valentine’s Day.

Charlie Stewart had previously visited Bupa’s Eastbank care home seven days a week to spend time with his wife Margaret after she moved into the specialist dementia unit.

Now, Charlie, 92 and Margaret, 87, who met in 1946 while working at a textile factory in Glasgow, celebrated their landmark wedding anniversary together on 28th January at the home. The loved-up couple were treated to live entertainment, and family, friends and Bupa staff were on hand to congratulate them and make the day one to remember.

The happy pair spoke of their joy at being together again and being able to share such special moments.

Charlie said: “I am overwhelmed to be able to spend every day with Margaret again and I’m feeling very happy and settled here. It’s fantastic to share a room together and be able to see each other whenever we want.

“The staff are wonderful and have put in a tremendous effort to accommodate our needs and it’s great to know that full time carers are here for me and Margaret whenever we need them.

“Celebrating our 66th anniversary together at the home was a very memorable moment, and we look forward to spending Valentine’s Day and many more special occasions here together in the future.”

Margaret said: “I honestly can’t put into words how it feels to have Charlie here with me again. We are just overjoyed.”

Margaret became a resident at Eastbank care home in May last year when her health began to deteriorate and Charlie joined her in January of this year. The couple, who are great-grandparents of 11 and one great great grandson, now share a bedroom at the home and a second room has also been transformed into their own personal living room.

Beth Monaghan, Activity Coordinator at Bupa’s Eastbank care home, helped organise the anniversary party for the couple’s big day and told of how the move has made a huge difference to them both.

Beth said: “I could not be more pleased for the couple and their family, being able to celebrate such a landmark occasion all together. It was a fantastic moment for the residents and we were delighted to be part of their day.

“It’s great to have Charlie with us at Eastbank and it’s wonderful that they are both near one another again. Our main aim now is to ensure that they continue to enjoy a happy life together.

“We all look forward to celebrating their 67th anniversary and beyond, and we have big plans for our Valentine’s Day party this year so it will be lovely to have such a real example of true love with us at the home.”
