Legal firm reaches out to older pros with help of commercial PR experts

Peter Aitken (L) with Peter Boyd (R)A Scottish legal firm is bucking an industry trend that is seeing top legal firms forcing out older lawyers – and is instead offering an olive branch to those looking to work into their retirement.

Edinburgh headquartered Boyd Legal is actively looking to attract experienced solicitors, reversing the findings of research[i] revealed in September that the biggest law firms are more proactively ‘moving aside’ older lawyers.

Managing Partner Peter Boyd, who has overseen a raft of appointments and mergers to drive a re-positioning of the firm this year, believes law firms are increasingly undervaluing more experienced professionals.

Peter Boyd said: “The research backs up the anecdotal evidence within the industry. Lawyers that are getting closer to retirement age are increasingly being left feeling undervalued and in some cases are effectively forced out the door.

“This has only been further fuelled as more firms merge and economies of scale sees senior staff being let go.

“In commercial terms, this represents a real opportunity for firms such as ourselves. Experienced operators can often bring in major business and, of course, have the depth of knowledge to tackle any kind of appointment – and too little importance is placed on their positive impact throughout the practice.”

The appeal to experienced professionals follows the merger with Kirkcaldy-based Gibson & Spears, Dow & Son, with the move allowing its proprietor, Peter Aitken, continue to be based at the Fife practice, now trading as Boyd Legal.

Peter Aitken said: “I have over 40 years experience in the law and am delighted that this experience is both appreciated and valued at Boyd Legal.”

Peter Boyd added: “I’m passionate about developing the next generation of lawyers, indeed we are able to boost bringing through staff who started with us as trainees. However that is not to the detriment of older professionals – legal firms provide services to a wide variety of clients tackling diverse issues and it only makes sense to have a variety of professionals in the building.

“We are actively looking and very keen to hear from experienced, skilled professionals who feel the time has come to move or who have been overlooked – to ensure their remaining years in the industry are their most enjoyable.”

Boyd Legal launched in 2004 and earlier this year rebranded and moved into new showpiece offices in Edinburgh’s Queensferry Street (the former Clydesdale Bank West End offices) in 2015. The firm has office space in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness and has advanced its expansion through the acquisition of Will databases in Coatbridge and Larkhall and an Edinburgh legal practice.

It also added to its portfolio in May when it acquired long-established Kirkcaldy firm, Gibson, Spears, Dow & Son.

Boyd Legal, which employs more than 30 staff, offers property, commercial, business, wills and estates, later life and family legal services.
