Bell Ingram Employee To Retire After Almost 50 Years

Bell Ingram Press releases

A LONG-SERVING employee with a Perth-based land and estate agent has announced she is packing away her calculator and welcoming retired life after nearly half a century on the job.

Geraldine Caven, who was born and bred in Perth, has worked with leading firm Bell Ingram since 1970, starting off fresh from school as an Office Junior at the formerly named H.J. Bell and Co.

From there, she worked her way up the career ladder, progressing to audio typist then to assistant receptionist. After two years on reception, Geraldine made the leap to working in the accounts department, excelling within this office, before progressing to supervisor and finally to her current role as senior accounts assistant to finance partner, Gordon Thoms.

During her 47 years with the company, Geraldine was present for a number of significant changes, including when it first changed its name to Bell Ingram in 1971 and when it became a Limited Company in 1995. However, it was fast-advancing technology that proved to be the biggest learning curve.

She said: “When I first started at the office, I learned how to use a manual type writer and, not long after that, this was replaced by a computer.  Now, all of our accounts are on laptops. With each technological change, I have had to learn and adapt which has been challenging but fun.

“I also have lots of very memorable moments from over the years, mainly from the charity events we got involved with, such as sponsored walks and It’s a Knockout, as well as all the dinner dances and Christmas lunches.

“A definite highlight was when Bell Ingram celebrated its centenary in 1999. It was such an achievement for the company and I’m very proud to be a part of its growth.”

Although Geraldine does not currently have any immediate plans for her retirement, she is hoping to use the time to catch up with old school friends and spend some time gardening.

She added: ” I’m extremely proud of where I’ve got to since starting back in 1970 and I’m very grateful to Bell Ingram for allowing me to progress so far.

“Although it’s a big change for me, I’m looking forward to taking charge of my own destiny. I’ll miss everyone at Bell Ingram but will definitely be keeping in touch with all the lovely people I have worked with over the years.”

Established 117 years ago, Bell Ingram has 130 professional staff across 11 UK offices including: farm, estate and forestry managers; chartered surveyors, estate agents, architects, planners, and building surveyors; and tourism, GIS mapping, and renewable energy specialists.
