U.S. Kids Golf European Championship Press releases

Young Golfer relieved by spectator’s safe recovery

Shannon Stevie McWilliam, who finished fourth in the US Kids Golf European Championship held at Gullane, was relieved that an unfortunate spectator struck by a ball Shannon hit quickly recovered.

The incident occurred in the third round of the tournament that included some of the sport’s finest players aged between five and 18.

Julie, Shannon’s mother, said: “She was very upset and told me that she feared she had killed the lady.”

“But the spectator recovered and after Shannon had regained her composure she finished the par 5 with a triple-bogey eight. But she went on to birdie the next hole, finishing the round with a gross 75.”

Finishing fourth qualified Shannon, 12, to play in the US World Golf Championships at Pinehurst in North Carolina. Shannon has already played in the tournament for the last two seasons, finishing 21st last year.

Julie said: “The Paul Lawrie Foundation helped Shannon financially to make her dreams come true by playing in the championships in 2010.”

Instead of returning to America this year Shannon has chosen to play in the Scottish Girls’ Amateur Championship and field in the Scottish Ladies’ Junior Open Stroke Play Under-21s Championship at Blairgowrie in July.

Shannon has also played against her mother and alongside Kimberley Beveridge, whom she teamed up with to win the Paul Lawrie Scottish School Championships at Murrayhall.
