MEMBERS of the local public are being invited to learn more about amendments to designs to improve the efficiency of a new South Lanarkshire wind farm – including a newly proposed grid connection.

Hamilton-based Banks Renewables is hosting a community exhibition at Sandford Village Hall, ML10 6BF, on Wednesday 6th November 2019, 3.30pm-6.30pm to encourage residents to discuss the firm’s plans for the 15 turbine 63MW Kype Muir Extension development.

Situated south of Strathaven, the site received full planning permission last month from the Scottish Government having already received support from South Lanarkshire Council’s planning committee earlier this year.

Based on changes to the onshore wind market, the improved plans increase the capacity and productivity of the development to generate more renewable electricity. Alongside the now operational Kype Muir wind farm, the combined 41 turbine project will be capable of powering over 122,000 homes.

At Kype Muir Extension, the Hamilton-based employer will install the latest turbine technology available, making it one of the most efficient wind farms in the UK.

Jeannie Raine, community relations manager at Banks Renewables, said: “It’s important for us to offer members of the public the opportunity to discuss our newly-approved revised plans for the Kype Muir Extension development.

“The new plans include a grid connection within the site of our operational Kype Muir wind farm, creating a new outbuilding in the process.

“It’s a nice opportunity to once again explain how and why our plans for Kype Extension have evolved.

“We’re also delighted that this more efficient version will increase the positive social, economic and environmental impact for the area surrounding the project – so it’s a nice opportunity to talk about the effect of that too.”

In line with its Connect2Renewables (C2R) initiative, Banks is to create over 300 jobs during the site’s development, construction and operation; guarantee “local first” tender lists; and provide direct training opportunities for the local community.

The creation of Kype Muir Extension will increase the Kype Muir Community Fund across the entire Kype Muir project with an additional £9.45m, totalling over £20m over the lifetime of both sites.

Banks Renewables is committed to clean energy and its promotion. It is equally driven to ensure that their projects deliver tangible and lasting social, economic and environmental benefits to the communities in which they operate.
