A RENEWABLES firm has kicked off a major investment in South Lanarkshire with the upgrade of a local road.

Hamilton based Banks Renewables has pressed the button on the work as the first phase of construction of its 88MW Kype Muir Wind Farm in South Lanarkshire – a project that sees Banks delivering on the commitments made within its ground-breaking Connect2Renewables Charter; and which is expected to deliver more than £44 million into the local economy over the next 30 years.

Lambhill Road will be a key access point for contractors over the course of the construction and life of the wind farm, and is being widened and improved. This will minimise disruption to local residents during construction, but will also provide long term benefits to them from a vastly improved access road to their properties.

After a consultation process with residents and the council, it was agreed that a short term closure to widen the 800m stretch of road would be the best option for local residents of the properties using the road, which has increased from six to 20 since Kype Muir Wind Farm got the go ahead.

Paul Denning, a resident of Lambhill Road, said: “Working with Banks Renewables has been a seamless experience. They have kept us informed through every stage of the development ensuring we are fully in the loop. We are really pleased with the investment in the local areas and also the development of Lambhill road.”

The road is being widened from single-track to a 5.5 metre, two-lane road and will include new passing places.

Work started on the 22nd August 2016 and will run until December 2016.

Banks Renewables has appointed local contractors RJ MacLeod to undertake the road improvement works, in line with Banks’ Connect2Renewables Charter which commits to supporting the local economy by using local suppliers where possible.

On completion of the Lambhill Road upgrade work will begin on construction of Kype Muir Wind Farm, which is expected to be fully commissioned in early 2019.

Banks Renewables’ commitment to South Lanarkshire in the form of its Connect2Renewables Charter is already providing significant economic benefits, with local firms RJ McLeod and Raeburn Geotechnical both having secured major contracts.

This is set to increase dramatically as construction continues on this major new green infrastructure in the windy uplands of South Lanarkshire.

Banks Renewables’ development director Colin Anderson said: “With a construction project as big as Kype Muir it’s really important to keep local people fully informed and do things correctly. Ensuring that we get the right local supply chain on board is also critical. I’m therefore pleased with the start we’ve made.

“Kype Muir has the potential to be transformational for the area, supporting both the local communities and the local economy to grow and flourish. Realising this potential is now really important and in this regard we must highlight the support that South Lanarkshire Council has provided in developing both our Connect2Renewables Charter and the Kype Muir Community Partnership which is soon to be constituted.”

Banks Renewables is part of the Banks Group (www.banksgroup.co.uk), a family firm founded in 1976, which now employs over 400 people in the renewable energy, property and mining sectors.
