Book-loving primary school pupils in Hawick celebrated their Achievement Award Assembly in style – with a little help from Banks Renewables.
Over 30 children at Trinity Primary School, aged between 3 and 12, took part in the Commonwealth Reading Awards, an initiative aimed at encouraging children to read more books at school and home.
Hamilton based wind energy firm, Banks Renewables, sponsored the activity, providing 26 gold, three silver and five bronze medals, before attending the special award ceremony on Monday (3rd) to present them to the delighted winners.
Pupils took part in reading challenges linked to a commonwealth sport, including speed reading and reading in pairs, earning points as they finished each challenge.
Deputy Head teacher Adam Lindsay said: “Developing both a child’s reading skills and a love for reading is very important. It opens up their imagination as well as giving them ideas and understanding to improve their writing and conversational skills. Engaging with non-fiction reading also helps them think, as well as learning new things.
“We wanted to create an engaging theme with fun activities that would encourage pupils to read more books both at school and at home.
“The tasks were designed to include family, friends and fellow pupils and the feedback we have had from parents and children has been terrific. It appears a great time was had by all involved.
“Thanks to the support from Banks Renewables we have been able to recognise every child with a medal that they can take home and be proud of.”
Banks Renewables have submitted proposals for a 15 turbine Birneyknowe Wind Farm, between Hawick and Bonchester Bridge. The plans have been carefully designed around feedback received from the community and the firm has been enthused by the amount of support received to date.
Miles Crossley, senior business development manager at Banks Renewables, explained that supporting and taking part in community events, such as the reading awards, is very much a part of the company’s ethos.
He said: “This project has been a great success and we were very happy to be asked to be involved in celebrating all the hard work the children put in over the last few months.
“It was great for me personally as I could see first-hand the reaction from the winning children. It was brilliant seeing them beaming with pride when they received their medals, which were all thoroughly deserved.”
During an intensive two year period of public consultation, local people told Banks Renewables that support was needed for a number of local projects and initiatives.
If the wind farm is approved, a community fund administered by Banks could generate up to £300,000-a-year for the local area to deliver direct funding into community groups, voluntary organisations and environmental projects.
Banks Renewables is part of the Banks Group, a family firm founded in 1976, which now employs more than 420 people in the renewable energy, property and mining sectors.
