Go-ahead Given for Crucial Balerno Home

Cala Homes Press releases

Edinburgh public relations experts help spread the word of Balerno development

A NEW housing development in Balerno has been approved that will provide a wide range of homes to meet soaring market demand to the west of Edinburgh and help ease the housing shortfall.

Local councillors supported a recommendation to approve the CALA Homes development that will see 206 new homes built on the site, located off Lanark Road West and adjacent to Old Newmills Road.

The site, which is identified in the emerging Local Development Plan (LDP) detailing the City of Edinburgh Council’s vision for residential development, also includes plans for a 3.1 hectare linear park and play facilities, addressing a lack of publically accessible green space within the village.

Significant contributions will also be made towards transport and education provision, to improve public transport accessibility and much needed investment for local schools.

Craig Lynes, Land Director at CALA Homes (East), believes as a responsible developer, CALA will ensure that the local area benefits significantly from the decision to approve the Newmills development.

“We have had a strong presence in the Balerno area for many years. In recognition of this, we have supported many local causes and community events in addition to our long-running sponsorship of Currie RFC.

“Most recently CALA supported the Balerno Village Trust in purchasing football and hockey goals for the new 2G pitch at Balerno High School. This support to the local community will continue throughout the life of the development, as we understand our important role in ensuring the best possible long term outcomes for the area.”

The important provision of affordable housing will be met with 51 new homes in two locations within the site, comprising 15 one bedroom apartments, 27 two bedroom apartments, six semi-detached homes and three terraced homes.

The private housing offering will include a wide range of one and two bed apartments, main door cottage and mews apartments, together with a range of family homes to include three bedroom terraced, four bedroom townhouses, and four and five bedroom detached homes.

Mr Lynes added: “It is also so important to address the housing shortfall. This development will help provide homes for a wide demographic from affordable homes for first time buyers, a mix of family homes and a wide range of apartments for downsizers. By helping meet that market demand, we will free up further properties throughout the market.

“It was very important to us that these plans were passed at the local level, as opposed to an appeal to the Scottish Government.”

The timeline for development is still to be confirmed, however CALA Homes hopes that work will be able to start on site Spring/Summer 2017.

CALA Homes is headquartered in Scotland and employs more than 850 people and earned its reputation on the high quality of the homes it builds, which are sensitively designed to augment the areas in which they are located.

The result is homes that are highly sought after and which retain their value over decades, earning loyalty from owners, who often live in a series of CALA properties.
