Once Abandoned Mill Site Becomes Best Medium Development

THE TRANSFORMATION of the site of a former derelict mill into a development of luxury homes has been recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony.
Housebuilder CALA Homes has landed ‘Private Development of the Year – Medium’ at the recent Homes for Scotland Awards, for its Kinleith Mill site located in Currie on Edinburgh’s outskirts.
Delighted staff from the firm, which has its UK-wide headquarters in the Scottish capital, picked up the accolade at the 2017 Homes for Scotland Awards at the trade body’s largest ever ceremony, held in Edinburgh last week in front of an 1100-strong crowd of senior industry leaders and guests.
Philip Hogg, Sales and Marketing Director with CALA Homes (East), said: “Kinleith Mill has been incredibly well received by house-hunters, so we are delighted to see its popularity reflected with our industry peers.
“This has been a very special development for us, and perfectly illustrates our skills in tackling challenging and unusual site locations, while being able to show off and deliver truly special and unique design.”
CALA delivered 89 homes at the 11 acre site situated next to the Water of Leith, including 4 and 5 bedroom detached homes, 3 and 4 bedroom semi-detached homes, 3 bedroom townhouses and a number of apartments.
The development also includes 16 properties earmarked as affordable options via a “Golden Share” scheme that offers 80 per cent ownership, enabling first time buyers the chance to get a foot on the property ladder.
Sales have been especially strong, with only 17 homes, 6 apartments and 13 golden share properties remaining.
The site turnaround is a result of careful renovation and the sensitive management of potential hurdles at the brownfield site of a former mill that had been left to ruin.
Inspired by its history, the architectural design is reminiscent of the mill buildings which were typical of the area, with attractive iron railings and traditional red brick integral to the overall design giving Kinleith Mill a real sense of character and place.
Situated in the Edinburgh suburb of Currie, the development offers an accessible location with excellent commuter links, yet within an idyllic tree-lined setting by the Water of Leith giving you the best of both worlds.
Edinburgh’s vibrant city centre is only seven miles away, meaning easy access to all that it has to offer, including iconic landmarks such as the Castle, Calton Hill, and a host of amenities including Michelin-starred restaurants, lively bars, theatres and extensive shopping opportunities.
The showhomes are open daily, 11am – 5.30pm, at Kinleith Mill. Viewings can be booked on 01324 442 904 or by visiting https://www.cala.co.uk/homes-for-sale/east-of-scotland/kinleith-mill
CALA, which has its national headquarters in Edinburgh, employs over 850 people and is the UKs most upmarket major homebuilder. Success at this year’s Homes for Scotland Awards comes after the developer was named ‘UK’s Best Medium Housebuilder’ at the most recent Housebuilder Awards in London.
