Thornhill garden praised in Keep Scotland Beautiful campaignA Falkirk housing development has been praised in a national environmental scheme for their project that gives older people the chance to develop their own garden.

Bield’s housing complex at Thornhill Court, Falkirk has been acclaimed in a Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign which highlights the work of community groups in improving their local area.

Bield is Scotland’s leading provider of housing and care for older people.

Tenants at Bield’s Very Sheltered Housing and daycare development at Thornhill Court have helped create a garden which can be enjoyed by all the tenants and service users.

It appeals to all the senses, with wind chimes, colourful flowers and lavender scents. Benches to sit on, and an accessible walkway make it a lovely place to wander around or just sit and appreciate. A regular ‘garden team’, consisting of tenants, are out every day tending the plants.

The Thornhill Court garden has already received a Keep Scotland Beautiful Certificate of Outstanding Achievement and a Certificate of Distinction in recent years. Now it has been included in the Keep Scotland Beautiful It’s Your Neighbourhood Annual Review, which highlights the work of communities around the country.

Angie Shanks, Resource Manager at Thornhill Court said ‘We are delighted with the accolade, which embodies Bield’s commitment to providing quality care which enhances and enriches lives.

Achievement

“The garden project was created five years ago by staff with the intention of helping empower tenants to eventually take ownership of it themselves.

“This has been achieved and now the majority of the planning, planting and maintenance is done by tenants.

“The garden is a real motivator for tenants to work together and has given them a sense of achievement. It was also a good way to improve the local environment.”

The Keep Scotland Beautiful Campaign rewards groups not just for their gardening achievements but for their contribution to the environment and for encouraging membersof the community to get involved.
