Latest intern, Hannah Walker has a summer party at Edinburgh PR agency, Holyrood PR

PR isn’t always a party, but there was cake on my first day.

My first week at an award-winning Edinburgh PR agency has already taught me so much. It was by far the best decision I made on how best to spend my summer.

After finishing my third year of university, I wanted to gain some experience in the field of public relations which I believed would benefit me in my final year – and who better to learn from than Holyrood PR.

Starting my first day was daunting, but the team at Holyrood PR made me feel completely welcome; offering me a cup of tea and then introducing me to the team, before bringing me into their world of work. From there I underwent a variety of tasks that changed by the hour, keeping me constantly on my toes. I was even offered cake which Abbie, a journalist based at the neighbouring Deadline News, had brought in for her birthday. A selfless act, in my opinion.

From then on, the first week had me dealing with a huge variety of clients, uploading a press release for Mackie’s ice-cream, researching the events of St Andrews for Bield and writing up blogs for drones. Quite the variety!

During my first week I was also able to join Seb, the videographer, on a photoshoot for Eagle Couriers with an Edinburgh Fringe act called Katie and Pip. Eagle Couriers were helping them deliver flyers around the city after hearing about the acts positive message. They are a special duo consisting of Katie, a 15-year-old girl with type 1 diabetes, and her border collie, Pip, who she trained to help save her life. They were a definite highlight of my first week. I was able to interview them and later at the office I got to help write up a press release for them.

From that I have been out on other visits, making a film for the Aviation Preservation Society on the building of a First World War plane, to travelling down to Surgeon’s Hall to show the variety of Fringe events they hold at their impressive venue.

There has been challenges within all of this: from dealing with SEO and website uploads, to writing press releases and blogs. It’s been an exciting first week of firsts, but I’ve been very grateful for the opportunity to face them.

The end of my first week was a definite eye opener, but the team here were amazing, answering all my questions and trusting me with tasks to take on. I’m looking forward to what will come in the next few weeks of my time here.
