Project Work and Other Clients Press releases

A multi million pound refurbishment project has transformed a set of Georgian townhouses in the heart of Scotland’s capital into Edinburgh’s plushest new hotel.

Located just five minutes from Princes Street, the Crowne Plaza Edinburgh – Royal Terrace, has undergone a dramatic face lift involving a £7.25 million investment.

Royal Terrace BedroomAfter being acquired by luxury hotel specialists, Prima Hotel Group in 2003, the boutique hotel has now been aligned with international brand Crowne Plaza Resorts & Hotels and has undergone a complete overhaul with the most recent £2.5 million refurbishment completing the final phase of the project.

Created by acclaimed Scottish hotel interior designers, ICA, the hotel’s new look now encompasses all of the grandeur to be expected from an 19th century property combined with a contemporary fresh feel.

Liam Walshe, Chief Executive Officer at Prima Hotel Group, said: “We want the Crowne Plaza Edinburgh – Royal Terrace to be the new, eye-catching first choice for anyone booking a stay in Scotland’s capital.

“The major investment and alignment with Crowne Plaza signals a very bright future for the new look Royal Terrace Hotel – as well as exciting new chapter in the long history of the building.

“Crowne Plaza is a very distinct brand that is tried and tested in many great cities across the world and provides us with access to an impressive global network and a high quality guest offering.

“For the refurbishment, it was important that we let the building and the grandiose surroundings speak for themselves by keeping the interiors sleek and classic. Together with the designers we came up with a concept that made the most of the striking period features yet provided all of the modern luxuries our guests would expect.

“Visitors to the capital can enjoy sumptuous contemporary surroundings while also feeling truly part of Edinburgh’s heritage by being at the heart of the New Town – yet just a few convenient minutes away from Princes Street.

“Whether here for business or pleasure we hope that the great lengths we have gone to preserve and reinvent the building will help us to retain our reputation as one of the finest places to stay in the capital.”

The seven individual townhouses on Royal Terrace that make up the hotel date back to 1860 where they were originally designed as part of a vision to house a ‘circle of fashionable and wealthy people.’

As such, early residents included solicitors, retired officers of the East India Company and merchants, who could watch for their ships arriving into Leith from their North facing windows.
