Lucky Barry’s brush with life changing surgery was averted thanks to pioneering Scots device – captured in powerful PR photography

A GREAT story deserves great imagery – and stories don’t come much more dramatic than the diabetes patient who avoided a double leg amputation with just hours to spare.

Architect Barry Mayled was facing the drastic, lifechanging surgery after multiple treatments had failed to make any impression on the ulcers plaguing his feet.

As high-powered medical team debated over dates and times for the operation, one younger medic suggested a last-ditch attempt to save Barry’s legs, using a pioneering microwave treatment developed in Scotland.

A few months later, the grateful Welshman was cured – thanks to the Swift device from health tech firm, Emblation. A programme of seven treatment with the Swift device was carried out by podiatrist Tracy Davis at Toetal Footcare in Cardiff.

To help Emblation tell the amazing story properly, we coordinated a photo session with both Barry and Tracy. That saw us source a professional news photographer, provide a detailed briefing, then choose a selection of images likely to prove a hit with the media.

We also sourced a series of images – not for the fainthearted – which showed just how badly affected Barry’s feet were at their worst point, while also chronicling each stage of his amazing recovery.

With the help of those images the story enjoyed massive cut through across the UK featuring in widespread broadcast, newspaper, online and social media coverage – the pics of Barry, Tracy and the Swift device were all used extensively.

Barry’s problems started with a simple verucca, which proved resistant to treatment and gradually worsened , became infected and led to severe ulcerations, with the infection getting dangerously close to his bones. Diabetics are particularly prone to serious leg issues which lead to amputations.
