Eagle Couriers has rewarded pupils at three primary schools in Bathgate who took part in their animal-inspired art competition, which was set up to raise awareness of a struggling local wildlife attraction.

The contest encouraged pupils to draw or paint pictures of their favourite animal in order to win family tickets to the Five Sisters Zoo in West Calder, which has been badly affected by the recession.

Three schools in the town entered the competition, which was also set up to celebrate Eagle Couriers’ expansion into a brand new headquarters and central depot in Bathgate. The new facility will complement the firm’s existing depots in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The artwork was especially couriered from each school to Eagle Couriers’ offices at the Easter Inch business park last week – where the entries were judged by the firm’s directors. The winners were then issued with their prizes before the start of the Easter school holidays.

Fiona Deas, one of Eagle Couriers’ directors, said: “The Five Sisters Zoo is our chosen charity for this year and we have been trying to raise awareness and funds for the attraction over the past few months.

“When we relocated our staff and head office to Bathgate, we thought the ideal way to help would be to set up a contest for local school children and offer them tickets for the zoo. With Easter coming up, it’s a perfect time to visit and a great family day out.

“All of the entries were fantastic and it is clear that there are a lot of very talented budding artists in Bathgate. We had great fun looking through all of the pictures and there was a lot of discussion in the office about which ones would win the prizes.

“After much deliberation, we have picked the best entries and have passed the prizes onto the lucky winners at the schools. We hope that everyone had fun entering the competition and that it has helped to promote the zoo.”

The schools taking part in the competition include St Columbas RC Primary, Boghall Primary and St Mary’s RC Primary School.

The winning entries at St Mary’s were: Rhianna Eggett (P1), Luke Igoe (P2), Mirtyn Marshall (P3), Abbie Moffat (P5), Ryan McLay (P6) and Catherine McCormick (P7).

Winning entries at St Columba’s were: Natatia Siejra (P1), Jamie Lee Watson (P2) and Chloe Heron (P3).

Winners at Boghall Primary were: Cara Brookes (P1), Kameryn Crooks (P2), James Baird (P3), Cara Shaw and Chloe Baird (P4).
