THE SCIENCE BEHIND NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS (Gaynor)

Every year we say we are going to do it and most of the time we don’t. Yes I am talking about the dreaded New Year’s resolution that we make each year and never keep. This article in the Huffington Post is a very interesting look into the different decisions that men and women make that lead to their New Year resolutions. Results of a recent survey carried out which revealed that women are more likely to make ‘fluffy’ resolutions such as spending more time with friends or to have more fun.  Men however are heavily fixated on trying to succumb their smoking or drinking habits. The interesting point to make is there are probably more women that need to work on these habits but are just too scared to admit it! Maybe men are more honest? Who knows? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/01/new-years-resolutions-women_n_1178801.html?ref=women

EVEN SCIENTISTS ARE FANS OF THE HOFF (Adrian)

It seems that even scientists who push the boundaries of human knowledge and discovery are secretly fans of bad 80s TV shows – and, in particular, Baywatch and Knight Rider star David Hasselhoff. A new report from the BBC highlights has highlighted how a team of UK boffins have discovered a new species of crab living near volcanic vents on the Southern Ocean floor, which they have decided to dub “The Hoff” due to their unusual appearance. Apparently each of the creatures has a particularly hairy chest, which has drawn comparisons with the US actor’s bare-chested antics on Baywatch. And although spoilsport professors will be giving the new species a proper scientific name in due course, I’m hoping that the “Hasselhoff crab” will be a moniker that sticks. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-16394430

2012 FOOD TREND PREDICTIONS (Victoria)

With each New Year comes new trends and the occasional unfortunate fad.

And the world of food is no exception. With 2011’s craze for Americana, the continuing popularity of cupcakes and the clever PR stunt by a London restaurant to sell ice cream made from breast milk (Baby Gaga), 2012 will surely throw up some surprises too. The Telegraph has published it’s foodie predictions for this year, which includes the rise of Scandinavian fare and the emergence of new world food hotspots such as Peru.  Smoked guinea pig anyone? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinkpicturegalleries/8989727/Top-ten-food-trends-for-2012.html

WEEGEE’S WORLD (Aimee)

Nothing to do with Glasgow, this link comes from one of New York’s finest photographers. Arthur “Weegee” Fellig was completely untrained but had a talent for spotting striking scenes and became best known for his crime scene photos taken from around the streets of the Big Apple throughout the mid 1930s and 40s. Turning up to crime scenes with freakish speed-often before the police even got there-he earned his nickname Weegee as a reference to the Ouija board. His pictures contain some graphic shots of victims of violent crime which might shock some but in a world where morbid images can be accessed so easily, these somehow capture you with more force. He also photographed the street scenes of his lower east side neighbourhood, spontaneously catching images of some strong personalities which are equally as striking.http://museum.icp.org/museum/collections/special/weegee/

DON’T MESS WITH THIS REPORTER (Lewis)

Whenever you watch a live news report you always see the idiots in the background trying to ruin it for the poor reporter. It’s either jumping behind him and pulling funny faces and normally we see the reporter just laughing it off or just telling the person to get lost. Not in this video. This unfortunate boy was getting involved with the crowds surrounding the reporter, laughing, joking and jumping about when out of nowhere the reporter punches the boy in the face with the microphone. I don’t agree with him hitting the boy but it will sure keep others off him when he does a live broadcast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x07eST-oUCY&feature=g-trend&context=G2a19a87YTAAAAAAAXAA
