KEEPING OUR ROADS ‘CLAER’ (Laura)

Spelling mistakes can happen to the best of us, but you don’t expect if from road painters and if you do you’d think they’d be quick to paint over it straight away. One group of blundering road painters in Kingswinford, West Midlands, got a bit mixed up when painting a ‘keep clear’ sign on one road painting ‘keep claer’ instead. It turns out though that they aren’t the first road painters to do so with one blunder in East London reading ‘Sus Stop’ instead of ‘Bus Stop’ – duh!

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST (Adrian)

We’ve already had some pretty high profile celebrity deaths in 2011 – including Amy Winehouse, Macho Man Randy Savage, Osama Bin Laden, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter Postlethwaite, just to name a few. But a little piece of my own childhood has now been snuffed out with the news that Charles “Bubba” Smith has died at the relatively young age of 66. A former Superbowl winner and NFL great, the giant actor is probably best known for his recurring role as Moses Hightower in the popular Police Academy movie franchise. Despite their retrospective awfulness, I loved the Police Academy films when I was a kid. But although they helped launch the careers of Steve Guttenberg, Sharon Stone and Kim Cattrall, I always felt that it was gentle giant Bubba Smith who deserved the big movie career – which, unfortunately, he never received. RIP Hightower. You’ll be missed by all of us who grew up in the 80s.

GOLF BOYS GO IRISH (Laura)

A group of lads from Kerry have given the PGA big boys a run for their money remaking the recent you tube hit Golf Boys, which features golfing stars such as Rickie Fowler and Bubba Crane try their hand at the pop chart. The four likely lads don the costumes and create a near perfect replica of the music video, even adding their own personal touch showing the group relaxing with a hard earned pint of Guiness afterwards. The lads are part of the Falvey’s (a pub in Killorglin rural Ireland) golf club and thanks to the success of the music video which has attracted over 2,000 views in just under 2 weeks the little known pub is sure to become a lot more famous. The lads have also made a hilarious blooper video, which you can watch afterwards – probably even better than remake clip!

YOU COULDN’T MAKE IT UP (AT LEAST ONLY UP TO A POINT, LORD COPPER) – (Scott)

It’s been said (frequently) that the phone hacking scandal engulfing the Murdoch media empire is so incredible that you’d be laughed at if you’d suggested it as a book or movie plot. But as this New York Times article points out, it bears all the hallmarks of legendary Fleet Street satire, Scoop by Evelyn Waugh – which was published in 1938. A simple case of history repeating?

EXPECTO LEGOS! POTTER GETS THE BRICK TREATMENT (Adrian)

The final instalment of Harry Potter is still making waves in cinemas, entrancing audiences and looking set to mount a serious challenge at next year’s Bafta and Oscar ceremonies. So what could possibly make it better? Well adding some legos for a start. This is a phenomenal shot for shot – or brick for brick – remake of the Deathly Hallows part 2 trailer detailed entirely in lego. And it’s absolutely stunning. I remember a decade or so back when a lego version of the Knights of the Round Table song from Monty Python and the Holy Grail was released and I thought it was one of the best things ever. Well, this is up there too. Some may argue that the video is a bit dated, as the film’s been out for a month but come on. It’s Harry Potter in legos! There’s never a bad time to show that…
