The award, sponsored by Banks Renewables, rewarded the skaters for their incredible success in 2014, across all three teams, with ages ranging from 10-18.

‘Solway Lightning’ is the youngest team, followed by ‘Solway Eclipse’ and then ‘Solway Stars’, which features the older and more experienced skaters.

Solway Stars Banks Renewables Holyrood Public RelationsAll three age-groups have tasted success during the 13/14 season. Solway Lightning picked up silver in an Open competition in London in October last year. Both Eclipse and Stars then followed that up with impressive medal haul at the Winter Championships in Belgium the following November.

However, the highlight of the year came in January this year at the British Synchronised Skating Championships in Sheffield, with the Stars team taking the gold at the Championship level – the first team from Dumfries to do so.

To add to this already impressive result, Eclipse also won Gold and Lightning Silver in teir respective age categories.

Phil Carter, coach of the Solway Skaters said: “We’re absolutely delighted to win the team trophy. It’s fantastic to see the teams’ hard work and commitment rewarded with such a well-known award from the region.

“The team-members are often on the ice before 6 to practice before school – they truly deserve the recognition.”

He added: “Recognition like this means a lot and if it wasn’t for the sponsorship from businesses such as Banks Renewables it wouldn’t be possible, therefore we’d like to thank them and all the other businesses who help to support groups and initiatives in Dumfries and Galloway.”

Hamilton based Banks Renewables is seeking to build the Knockendurrick Community Wind Farm between Twynholm and Gatehouse of Fleet.

By harnessing wind power, the site has the potential to provide enough clean, green energy for up to 14,000 homes. The Community Partnership approach to the scheme would see local people share 3% of the site’s gross revenue, which could be worth £6.5 million over the 25 years of the development.
