Bield Housing And Care Press releases

Oakburn Sports DayA day care facility in Milngavie has put the hop and skip back into its service users’ step by hosting a Sports Day to mark the opening of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Oakburn Park Day Care invited its 25 service users along on Thursday 24 July to the centre to take part in an afternoon of specially-adapted sports, quizzes and lunch inspired by the participating Commonwealth countries.

From its own unique version of the javelin event – with a bean bag equivalent – to football and darts, two teams competed against each other in a bid to be crowned the sports day winners.

The 2014 Games-inspired day was followed by an afternoon of bingo and quizzes testing the service users’ knowledge of some of the countries competing in Glasgow.

Donna McCallum, manager of Oakburn Park Day Care Centre, said: “There has been such a fantastic atmosphere in the run up to the Games so we decided to hold a sports day of our own.
“It’s really important to keep the service users active so hosting activities like this is the ideal way to get everyone moving, socialising and ultimately having fun with each other.

“We adapted several of the real events to suit our users’ needs but still got everyone enjoying a little friendly competition.

“It was just great to see the service users smile and give all the activities a try and is hopefully something we can repeat in the near future.”

A new  Bield housing development for older people is currently under construction by local affordable housing provider Lovell close to Oakburn Park Day Care.  Lovell began work in April on the scheme which will create 20 shared ownership apartments for Bield.

As part of its commitment to support the local community, Lovell generously donated £150 to Oakburn Park to help celebrate its sport day in style, cementing its commitment to improving the lives of older people in the Bearsden area.

The money went towards buying decorations, sweet treats and cakes and will help support more activities throughout the week.

Alan Taylor, regional director for affordable housing developer Lovell, says: “We thought the Sports Day was a great way for residents to celebrate the Commonwealth Games taking place in Glasgow.

“We’re committed to helping with community events wherever we can and were delighted to team up with Bield to support such an enjoyable activity for their residents.”

Bield – a registered charity in their 41st year of business – has grown from humble beginnings, opening its first housing development in Bo’ness to become a major provider of a wide range of housing and care services for around 20,000 older people across 22 local authorities.
