IS THIS REALLY IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE (FICTION)? (Raymond)

As someone who really never got Lord of the Rings, and who is violently indifferent to the upcoming movie of The Hobbit, it was pretty certain that a blog mocking those grotesque science fiction and fantasy book covers was going to appeal to me.  While acknowledging that there have been some impressive covers, the blog largely condemns most to the label of ‘bad art’ showcasing some truly spectacular examples of false perspectives, anatomical befuddlement, ridiculous transport vehicles, oversized and frankly unusable monster-hunting weaponry and clothing choices that would get you killed walking down the street let alone hiking a through a frozen wasteland.  All good – if not slightly weird – fun.

MAN IS CAUGHT DRUNK DRIVING HIS BEER COOLER (Pamela)

I know it’s not big and it’s not clever but I love stories like this.  This fella was arrested in his home town somewhere in Australia after he was caught driving his beer cooler under the influence of alcohol.  He was a “staggering” three times over the legal drink drive limit, which resulted in him losing his licence and having to fork out £320 in fines. It all happened after he and his friends bought the cool box for $600, and failed to resist the temptation to drive it once they have drunk its contents.  My question is…….why do they make mobile beer coolers.  Bring that kind of technology to me.  The irony is too muchery.

CAN I GET A REMIX (Aimee)

There is virtually a remix for everything on Youtube, so it was no surprise that one has emerged of the fearless West Indian pensioner standing up to rioters and looters in Hackney.  The unnamed woman is seen standing in the middle of a group of hooded youths who are vandalizing a building and her obvious anger spills out into a verbal attack on those who are not fighting for a cause, but partaking in mindless violence.

The musical addition does not detract your attention away from the bravery of the woman or the significance of the points she is making.

SUPER STOP-MOTION MARIO (Adrian)

This homage to the classic NES game Super Mario Brothers is possibly the most impressively nerdy feat of artistic prowess I’ve ever seen. Armed with little more than paper, glue, a stop motion camera and an orchestra, Mario enthusiast JeremiahHJW has re-created the entire first level of the 8-bit console game – and it’s absolutely spot on.

I dread to think how many hours of frustration went into animating this minute-long clip, but the results are well worth it. Top work fella.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW THAT’S LITERALLY OUT OF THIS WORLD (Laura)

Forget holiday’s to Spain, so we could be holidaying in space, if plans for the first space hotel get the go ahead. Designed by the Russians the hotel which is set to be open in 2016 will give you breath taking views of the Earth below – but it won’t be cheap as one night costs £100,000 per person and that’s on top of a £500,000 rocket flight to get there! Called the Commercial Space Station the pod shaped hotel can accommodate up to seven guests in four cabins and comes complete with gravity defying showers and a gourmet freeze dried food menu. No swimming pool though which is a shame and there is definitely no chance of coming back with a tan!
