Scotland’s leading independent courier firm has set up a special primary school art competition in order to raise awareness of a struggling West Lothian tourist attraction.

Eagle Couriers has organised the competition for pupils attending primary schools across Bathgate, which it hopes will help promote the Five Sisters Zoo and Wildlife Park.

The contest will see pupils draw or paint pictures of their favourite animal in order to win family tickets to the wildlife attraction in nearby West Calder, which has been badly affected by the recession.

So far three schools in the town have signed up to enter the competition, which has also been set up to celebrate Eagle Couriers’ relocation from Glasgow and Edinburgh to a brand new headquarters in Bathgate.

Once completed, all of the artwork will be especially couriered from each school to Eagle Couriers’ offices at the Easter Inch business park – where the entries will be judged by the firm’s directors and prizes will be issued to winning pupils before the school holidays.

Fiona Deas, one of Eagle Couriers’ directors, said: “The Five Sisters Zoo is our chosen charity for this year and we have been trying to raise awareness and funds for the attraction over the past few months.

“When we relocated our staff and head office to Bathgate, we thought the ideal way to help would be to set up a contest for local school children and offer them tickets for the zoo. With Easter coming up, it’s a perfect time to visit and a great family day out.

“We’re delighted with the response we have had from the head teachers at the schools, who have all been very helpful in arranging to host our competition. Hopefully all of the participants will have a lot of fun drawing their favourite animals and we will have a tough task in picking the winning entries.”

The schools taking part in the competition include St Columbas RC Primary, Boghall Primary and St Mary’s RC Primary School.

Eagle Couriers is Scotland’s leading independent courier company, with almost 30 years’ experience and an annual turnover of £2.3 million. The firm employs 100 staff across Scotland, who are based at its head office in Bathgate and satellite depots in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
