HOW TO EXPLOIT TRAGEDIES AND ALLIENATE PEOPLE (Adrian)

The events of September 11th 2001 have become entrenched in the collective public consciousness – with every tragic event now compared against the terrorist attacks on the twin towers in New York. But despite being one of the worst atrocities in recent memory, this hasn’t stopped creative agencies from using the attacks as the basis for eye catching adverts, films and posters. Often for things that have little – or no – connection to 9/11 whatsoever.

Here’s the top examples of outrageous pop culture references to the World Trade Centre attacks.

BIG CASE OF RED PEN (Andrea)

A person irritated by the tales that British newspapers tell and the people who write them has created a blog expressing this anger. The daily posts are examples of bad press from across the board, but if you want to only see what The Sun has been up to for example, you can check out the handy subheadings.

And if this floats your boat, get over to Twitter and follow @badjournalism for a great selection of some of the worst stories, bloopers and unbelievable headlines around.

HOW COMPUTERS ARE BETTER THAN PEOPLE FOR DISHING OUT WONGA (Scott)

You might know the Wonga name from watching Premiership football, since they are the shirt sponsors of top flight new boys, Blackpool FC. In fact Wonga is the UK’s fastest growing lender, partly because the default rate among customers is so low. How have they achieved this? By removing people from the decision-making process and letting a computer algorithm decide who’s loan application is or isn’t approved.

INCEPTION THE APP (Laura)

Were you blown away by Inception and the whole idea that you could create a dream and enter someone’s consciousness? Now you can create your own dream world with this new app based on the movie, which helps your brain construct whatever dreams you want. Available on iPhone, app users can recreate up to thirteen different dream states including Sunshine dreams, action dreams and event an airport dream. The app also includes an Easter egg that recreates the ‘kick’ in the movie. The app works by transmitting a 30 minute sound track which is designed to incite whichever dream you choose. Another example of sci-fi becoming reality – lets hope they don’t make one for nightmares though!

BIRD MESS BRINGS LUCK SAYS LOTTO WINNER

A man from New Zealand swears by the old wive’s tale that when a bird drops one on your head then you’re sure to have some good luck – at least that’s what happened to him.  After an unwanted gift from our feathered friends landed on his head, he immediately bought a scratch card and won £100,000.  Now maybe he can buy a hat to prevent the birds messing his hair again.
