With shows and street performers to suit almost everybody’s humour, one Edinburgh Festival venue has decided to sweeten the Fringe for a younger audience- by becoming PG-friendly.
The Three Sisters, or the Free Sisters during the Edinburgh Festival, is the world’s biggest free fringe festival venue and is welcoming children to the Cowgate venue to enjoy the widest choice of children’s entertainment on offer.
From cinema screenings of Pixar’s Up to interactive screen plays “The Princess Pirate” and “Huggers” featuring magicians and street performers, the shows are all designed to keep the whole family entertained.
Shows run from 9am right through to 3pm with a sweet shed stacked with ice cream, popcorn and penny sweets, to add that special touch for any kids with a sweet tooth.
Children’s shows such as ‘The Very Scariesome Tooth Fairy’ and ‘Game-On’ have already proved a hit, with many praising the venue for including children in their plans.
Jo Goodier, a festival goer and mother of two from Doncaster, emphasised how important it is that children are included in activities.
She said: “Helping children to engage and interact with culture as well as teaching them to listen is a great experience” with Lynn Givens, from Edinburgh adding, “children don’t feel they are included in the festival, and yet, they love the street theatre. This is the third show we’ve come to see. We come to Three Sisters especially for the children’s shows.”
As for the kids themselves, Freya Goodier, aged 5 loved ‘The Very Scariesome Tooth Fairy’, offering no protection from spoilers, saying: “My favourite part was the ending when the fairy was saved by all the children.”
Sean McGettigan, General Manager of Three Sisters, said the feedback so far has been fantastic from both parents and children and looks forward to welcoming more families over the coming weeks.
He said: “There was always a plan to put a big focus on events for children and families this year after the great success in 2013.
“This year we’ve stepped our game up and brought in face painters, clowns and even a sweetshop in the courtyard for the kids to indulge and enjoy.
“Putting on children’s shows allows us to offer a whole day out for the entire family with lots of different shows going on right through the day.
“Even if the weather tries its best to dampen the atmosphere, we are determined to make this year one to remember for everyone and look forward to the next couple weeks of free shows, live entertainment and the great buzz that surrounds the festival.”
