Edinburgh's Telford CollegeScotsman Online covers Edinburgh’s Telford College involvement in the World of Football’s building of its newest sports facility

Edinburgh’s Telford College has teamed up with World of Football to turn the college’s tired playing fields into a top of the line indoor sporting facility for use by both students and the local community.

The project will span nearly 5,000 sq metres, have six indoor five-a-side pitches housed in a clear-roofed structure, and have four full-size pitches outdoors.

The DeMarco family, which owns World of Football, said the new complex would be similar to those at the Corn Exchange, but played under a translucent fabric roof to allow for natural lighting during the day.

Paul DeMarco said: “We have designed something that is pretty unique. With this Project we are getting to build something from scratch whereas the corn exchange had an existing listed building.

“Also, in terms of the latest technology we are using the same turf used by Manchester United at their Carrington training academy. We are a family business and started out in Granton with the Jubilee Cafe, so this is a bit like coming home for us.”

The building will take about five months to build after the deal has been signed. This facility will benefit not just Telford College and the students from the new Edinburgh College when the merger happens in October, but also sports enthusiasts across the city that will be able to hire out the pitches.

Edinburgh’s Telford College is one of Scotland’s largest independent further education colleges.  They provide a wide range of career related programmes and currently have around 17,000 students and 600 members of staff.
