The company, which recently invested more than £3m in a state of the art water recirculation facility at its hatchery facility in Furnace, has donated £500 to Tayinloan Village Committee to help revamp local amenities and provide a much needed lift in community spirits.

Andrew Robertson, Chairman of Tayinloan Village Committee, said: “The village has become tired looking over the years and this generous donation will go a long way to helping boost the local community.

“For a while now there has been nothing much for the kids in the area to do and we have been pushing the local council to help us change this, but unfortunately they are only responsible for certain areas.

“That means it is up to us to make this change happen and support from companies such as Meridian Salmon Group will help kick start this.”

Andrew, who is also site manager at Meridian Salmon Group’s Loch Garasdale facility, added: “The money given will now go towards improving local amenities not only for the local kids, but the local residents as a whole.”

Local resident Frances McNeil added: “It is great to hear that Meridian Salmon Group is helping us in our bid to regenerate the village and help give the local children who are bored something to do.”

Tayinloan Village Committee will use the £500 to upgrade a children’s play area which has become dilapidated in recent years. The committee also has plans to raise further funds to create an area of allotments in the village.

Meridian Salmon Group has also arranged for a garden bench to be donated to the village by one of its key suppliers, Fusion Marine.

Managing Director Mark Warrington said: “We are dedicated to supporting the local communities both in and around where we operate and we are delighted that we have been able to help Tayinloan Village Committee as part of its community rejuvenation mission.”

Meridian Salmon Group is one of the top five salmon farming companies in Scotland, employing 350 people particularly in small communities in Shetland, Orkney and the West Coast. It operates at 61 sea sites and 19 freshwater sites across Scotland and Cumbria and is currently developing its new facility in the former Lexmark building in Rosyth, which will be the biggest processing plant in the UK.

The company’s investment is particularly crucial in Scotland, where it helps supports an industry that directly employs 2124 people – and thousands more in the salmon supply chain.

In particular, hundreds of jobs and fragile rural, island economies are dependent on the salmon farming industry, which is now Scotland’s biggest food exporter and worth £1.4bn to the Scottish economy in the last four years.
