HAKUNA Matata has been music to the ears of hotels across Edinburgh after The Lion King sparked an unprecedented sales boost.

The  typically sluggish month of January for the hospitality industry was completely transformed as Disney’s musical showstopper roared into town, helping one hotel – The Inn On The Mile – record its busiest ever start of the year.

Scotland’s exciting Year of Homecoming couldn’t have got off to a better start as occupancy rates at the hotel, located on Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile, were up 35%.

It wasn’t just The Inn on the Mile’s sales figures that heated up with the arrival of the African Savannah in Edinburgh as its sister venues in the capital, Grassmarket Hotel, The Murrayfield House and STAY Central all witnessed similar trends.

Laura Keay, Senior Revenue Manager said, “We are absolutely delighted to have kicked off 2014 with such fantastic sales figures and are in no doubt that this has been largely to do with The Playhouse’s production of The Lion King.

“Having worked in the hotel trade for 18 years I know how tough a month January can be and it is almost unheard of to have had such a busy period.

“The fact that Edinburgh played host to the only Scottish season of The Lion King certainly helped sales as avid fans from all over the country came to see the show – with many deciding to make a city break out of it.

“With such wide reaching appeal, the show attracted everyone from children to pensioners and even international guests who couldn’t speak English raved about the spectacle.

“The production created a real buzz in the city and it’s great that people are able to enjoy award winning shows without having to make a trip down to London.”

The Lion King is estimated to have boosted the Edinburgh economy by £17 million as people flocked to the city’s hotels, bars and restaurants.

Rooms Set to Fly With Spell Binding Boost

And the city is now gearing itself up for a second theatrical boost when another musical blockbuster, Wicked, comes to the capital later in the year.

Laura added: “We have already seen a spike in demand for rooms next winter which we believe is definitely linked to Wicked, so we are looking forward to another thriving set of occupancy rates.”

With hotel rooms experiencing a sharp increase in sales it is recommended that bookings for the Inn on the Mile are made soon and directly to guarantee a 5% discounted rate.

Created by acclaimed designer Jim Hamilton, The Inn on the Mile, is a boutique hotel with nine stunning bedrooms and enjoys a prime location at the very heart of the city. Each room includes iPod docks, a large flat screen TV, free Wi-Fi and even GHD straighteners.

With a real emphasis on providing locally sourced food and drink of the highest quality, the hotel boasts an extensive menu and drinks list of Scotland’s finest offerings.
