Meridian Salmon Group Press releases

Meridian logo for web newsThe future of one of Shetland’s most established and well attended sporting events is secure thanks to sponsorship from one of Scotland’s biggest Salmon farming firms.

The Yell Badminton Tournament will hold its 25th annual competition at the Yell Leisure Centre in April 2013 thanks to the sustained financial backing of Meridian Salmon Group.

Open to everyone, the event will see competitors from Shetland, Orkney, Caithness and sometimes even further afield, come together to battle it out for the title of Yell Open Champion.

Laura Guthrie, Secretary of the Yell Badminton Club said: “This is a great community event which attracts an extremely high standard of competitors each year, and which encourages locals and tourists alike to come out and show their support.

“Without support such as this, it could not be the massive success it has continued to be for the past 24 years. Everyone involved, whether they are participants, organisers or spectators, are hugely grateful to the firm for its unwavering backing.

“The Tournament is thoroughly enjoyed by the whole community and most would agree that it is the social event of the year, not just for those playing, but also for those who go along to watch.”

With an extremely high standard of players participating each year, Dan Travers, former Commonwealth Games gold and European bronze medalist has also been a much welcomed contender in this tournament.

The event, run over two days in early April, sees the singles compete on the Friday and the doubles on Saturday. The event itself is followed by a buffet and entertainment, usually in the form of a local band or musician, allowing the whole community an opportunity to socialize.

Each year a performance trophy, sponsored by Meridian, is presented to the winners. Past champions have received bespoke clocks, champagne glasses and a variety of other unique prizes.

The entire community come together to watch the games and have a great time getting involved in the celebrations afterwards.

Managing Director Mark Warrington said: “We are dedicated to supporting the local communities both in and around where we operate and we are delighted that we have been able to support The Yell Badminton Club for as long as we have.”

Meridian Salmon Group is one of the top five salmon farming companies in Scotland, employing 350 people particularly in small communities in Shetland, Orkney and the West Coast.

The firm operates at 61 sea sites and 19 freshwater sites across Scotland and Cumbria and is currently developing its new facility in the former Lexmark building in Rosyth, which will be the biggest processing plant in the UK.

The company’s investment is particularly crucial in Scotland, where it helps supports an industry that directly employs 2124 people – and thousands more in the salmon supply chain.

In particular, hundreds of jobs and fragile rural, island economies are dependent on the salmon farming industry, which is now Scotland’s biggest food exporter and worth £1.4bn to the Scottish economy in the last four years.
